10 Questions: Clint Gyory, the New Nittany Lion

lionWhat residence area do you live in and how do you like it?
First semester I had lived in East Halls, but I now have moved out into a house off of campus that me and my Dad have purchased and co-own.

What has been your favorite class this year?
Micro Economics with Dirk Mateer

If the Nittany Lion were to take any girl on a date, who would it be? What would they do?
This is a tough one, I feel that the Lion and PJ would be a good match. And for our date I would try to make it fun, none of this boring dinner and a movie stuff. The girl I live with has a horse up here so I feel that a neat date would be to go over to the barn and take her for a ride.

Canyon Pizza, Brother’s Pizza, or Gumby’s?
Brother’s Pizza is definitely my favorite if I am going for pizza, but the Pokey Sticks from Gumby’s are definitely number one in my book.

Skiing, sledding, or snowboarding?
I love to snowboard, I have gone out west to Jackson Hole Wyoming a few times and was up at Mount Tremblant in Canada over Christmas break. I had skied ever since I was about three years old and switched over to snowboarding at about the age of fourteen. I grew up about ten minutes from a nice mountain in Pennsylvania but nothing compares to boarding out west. The mountains out west are amazing and there is always fresh powder. Nothing can beat snowboarding through waist deep snow down a huge mountain.

If you could be any dinosaur, what dinosaur would you be?
I think I would be a pterodactyl because I think it would be awesome to be able to fly around the prehistoric world checking out all of my dinosaur buddies from the sky. Ha!

How did you prepare for the Nittany Lion try-outs?
Well I had to fill out an application which asked me why I wanted to become the mascot and other similar questions. Then I had an interview in front of the eleven judges. And finally there was the physical tryout this took the most preparation. I needed to prepare a two and a half minute skit including props and other people, I had to be ready to improvise for 30 seconds with anything the judges gave me, and finally the one armed push ups. I needed to do fifty. I did more one armed push ups than I could even count in preparation for the tryout.

What’s your favorite Creamery flavor?
Peanut Butter Swirl, but I love anything with peanut butter.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen happen at Penn State?
I think the strangest thing that I have seen is probably the Willard preacher and his army of people the day they had all of their gigantic signs.

What song do you think best describes the Nittany Lion?
It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Want to Rock and Roll) by AC/DC
It says how anything you want to achieve you are going to have to work for, and nothing really good is going to happen unless you roll with the punches, pay your dues, and work hard

Penn State and the Process of Life

To paraphrase Mark Twain: The reports of higher education’s death have been an exaggeration. American universities produce more research and relevant knowledge for the world at large than any other institutions I know of. Tuition may be too damn high, but over the long-run, undergraduate degrees are definitely worth the cost. But Penn State could be so much more. It used to be, I think.
