Gaining Twitter Traction with 100 Days ’til THON

With 100 Days ’til THON, Twitter is beginning to go THON crazy. It’s an annual thing now.

Over the past three years, the organization has become very adept at using Twitter and Facebook to rally its supporters. Last year THON benefited from @AbolishCancer@PerezHIlton, and @KhloeKardashian. This year is starting to pick up and THON has begun tapping its resources in even more interesting ways.

Today, for instance, the Penn State twittersphere was abuzz with @THON related conversations for a number of reasons: a @THON-led Twitter scavenger hunt, tweets from Twelebrities like Khloe Kardashian, and a colorful and enthusiastic celebration in the HUB by THON supporters.

Check out this story I produced with Storify to show you what today’s been like for THON on social media.

THON has been tomorrow for many months now, but the coming 100 days will be especially busy with canning weekends and other preparations for the February 18-20 dance marathon.

My question to all of you: What do you think of how THON uses Twitter? Also, if you have suggestions on other interesting THON-related social media initiatives, post them in the comments!

Penn State and the Process of Life

To paraphrase Mark Twain: The reports of higher education’s death have been an exaggeration. American universities produce more research and relevant knowledge for the world at large than any other institutions I know of. Tuition may be too damn high, but over the long-run, undergraduate degrees are definitely worth the cost. But Penn State could be so much more. It used to be, I think.
