THON 2011 Live Blog: Saturday

12:03 a.m. – As we transition into the final day of THON, we’ll keep bringing you updates in our Sunday live blog. Consider this one closed as we move our continuous coverage over.

11:48 p.m. – An hour ago, the line to get in to the BJC was staggering. But now, the stands are virtually empty, as dancers and spectators buckle in for a long night. Now would be a good time to show your support for your friends on the floor.

11:34 p.m. – But rejuvenation follows just minutes later, as another rendition of the line dance unites everyone in the Bryce Jordan Center.

11:30 p.m. – Our journey through the decades is over, and the crowd starts to thin. Many students are ready to head home for some sleep. We’re a little bit jealous. But if the Blue Band can keep belting out hits, like “Who Are You,” I think we’ll be just fine.

11:19 p.m. – “We want the Lion!” Drop and give us 46 one-armers buddy! He obliges, much to the delight of the capacity crowd.

11:17 p.m. – And football wins this year’s pep rally.

11:14 p.m. – Some inspirational messages from all those sports teams who couldn’t make it because of their schedules.

11:11 p.m. – Break it down, Nittany Lion! Backflip ftw.

11:09 p.m. – Hm. Interesting. Matty McGloin is home in Scranton while Robert Bolden is leading the crowd here in the BJC in a “For the Kids” chant.

11:07 p.m. – This decades theme has provided us with an eclectic variety of music. Which decade was your favorite? Which team? The voting is about to begin. But first, some Apache, Brittany Spears, M.C. Hammer and more from the football team!

11:05 p.m. – Ah, combating that girl power with some more Backstreet Boys. In case you haven’t gotten enough of it with the number of times it was played over the speaker system already today. This time, it comes compliments of women’s soccer.

11:03 p.m. – The 90s opens with Spice Girls.

10:53 p.m. – Before going onto the 80s portion of the decades theme, P.J. asks us to all help raise money for THON by texting FTK to 5055.

10:45 p.m. – Sports players in drag are always funny!

10:36 p.m. – And the loudest ovation of the weekend goes up as former Blue Sapphire P.J. Maierhoffer takes the stage to emcee the Pep Rally.

10:30 p.m. – Are we inside the BJC for THON, or for a basketball game? We’ve had the cowbell P-S-U and now “We Are…Penn State” chants fill the arena. Makes sense that the cheerleaders would follow that up with Rock and Roll, with modified, THON-friendly lyrics.

10:10 p.m. – The football team and other sports teams have begun filling up the athlete pit.

9:58 p.m. – Volé is putting on some routines for the crowd.

9:44 p.m. – There’s a guy down there among the ladies, and he’s got some moves that are almost as gnarly as current Blue Sapphire Matthew Freeman’s.

9:39 p.m. – Twirling and dancing to some crowd favorites like Dynamite. Could there be a future Blue Sapphire among them?

9:37 p.m. – The Feature Twirlers of Altoona are on stage for their “biggest performance of the year.” No pressure girls.

9:25 p.m. – Red Light Green Light is underway and the competition appears to be heating.

9:18 p.m. – The Line Dance has really come into form. These dancers have flow.

9:06 p.m. – Pom Poms and “We are Penn State” chants, the BJC is rocking.

8:48 p.m. – After standing for over 24 hours, a dancer is relieved of his pain through a soothing massage from a moraler.

8:40 p.m. – The BJC likes to move it, move it. Nothing beats Jock Jams.

8:34 p.m. – Time for some treasure hunt Kids’ Mail Call, let the games begin.

8:06 p.m. – Immediately followed by Teach Me How To Dougie? Whatever, at least people are cheering for this one.

8:04 p.m. – I am so happy we’re getting our hourly dose of Backstreet Boys…

7:56 p.m. – JAI HO!

7:54 p.m. – Birthday anouncements! Happy birthday to everyone who has a birthday today!!!

7:49 p.m. – Two more vocalists finish up the set. THONing with the Stars is always a fun segment. These kids are great!

7:38 p.m. – Girls showcasing their vocal skills is becoming a trend. From a girl with the pipes of Aretha Franklin to the guitar and vocals duo, these girls know how to rock it.

[nggallery id=thon-dave-cole]

7:31 p.m. – And this little guy’s raging on stage. Everyone’s loving those sweet, angsty dance moves.

7:27 p.m. – “If you’re the owner of a white Jeep Cherokee, your car is literally running in the parking lot.” Whoever you are, we found your keys. They’re in the ignition.

7:19 p.m. – The end of her song is met with thunderous cheers and applause from the crowd. Way to go, future Taylor! Now we’re going to be treated to some Katy Perry. Another Firework cover tonight, and we’re loving it.

7:17 p.m. – From the next Justin Bieber to the next Taylor Swift, these kids have talent.

7:13 p.m. – This kid is great! Sibling violence jokes = priceless. That’s my childhood right there.

7:11 p.m. – “Wow, that was great; sounded like you might be the next… Justin Bieber?” -Announcer

7:08 p.m. – THONing with the stars is beginning with a solo guitar/vocal act.

7:03 p.m. – More Backstreet Boys. Seriously, no need to be ashamed. It’s THON. Feel free to sing along.

6:33 p.m. – Anyone know the lyrics to Tearin’ Up My Heart? Don’t be shy, sing along!

6:27 p.m. – Table Ten ends their set with a La Bamba/Twist and Shout medley. Interesting choice.

6:02 p.m.  – We’ve hit 24 hours! Only 22 to go…

5:50 p.m. – The Scientist who created these Zombies can Have Whatever they Like – song mash-up. Thanks @padgepadge

5:43 p.m. – Table Ten has hit the stage to perform, and to hold Jimmy Fallon to his word of 1k (that’s right, opening with Seed 2.0 by the Roots, as per request)

5:35 p.m. – We all know Miley Cyrus likes to party, it’s a party in the BJC.

5:13 p.m. – Chug water for the social, and now it’s time for a Twitter social. Let’s get #THON trending!

5:10 p.m. – Now playing, “Beat it” by Michael Jackson. Go State Beat Cancer!

5:05 p.m. – Who let the dogs out? Woof Woof

5:00 p.m. – Another wave is making its way around the BJC stands.

4:48 p.m. – Hair is being cut; Wigs for Kids

4:33 p.m. – It’s getting tricky with Graham Spanier up on stage!

4:23 p.m. – Members of various fraternities are reprising their winning performances from this year’s Talent Show competition at Homecoming. The dance routines reference themes from Alice in Wonderland to sports and Space Jam.

4:08 p.m. – The Juggling Club takes the stage after Joe Martin led the crowd in a “We are…Penn State” chant.

4:03 p.m. – Former Four Diamonds Child Joe Martin takes the stage. The crowd is silent as he tells his heart-warming story. The crowd erupts in applause as he announces that he is cancer-free.

3:54 p.m. – Dance party on the stage.

Photo: Lauren Feinstein

1:10 p.m. – This is THON 2011:

1:07 p.m. – Glee sing-along begins with a tease of one of OS Dancer Dan Vecellio’s dancer requests, “Somebody to Love”, but not the Queen version. Don’t worry Dan, we’ll have a word with DJ Larry Moore about this.

11:13 a.m. – Some classic favorite movies. Lady and the Tramp, let’s eat some spaghetti together

11:10 a.m. – If you had a band, what would you name it? We’ve heard “The Screaming Banchees” and “The BFFs”

11:00 a.m. – The favorite show seems to be Wizards of Waverly Place. I still vote Spongebob

10:55 a.m. – The kids are working the runway. Cartwheels and piggy back rides

OPP Slides of Strength from Eric Weiss on Vimeo.

8:16 a.m. – We see Onward State alum and Morale superstar (seriously– how are they all so cheery?) Paul Lavra helping out on the dance floor with the current Color Wars activity. We love to see OS peeps doing great things!

8:13 a.m. – Cubed, a band from Penn State Hazleton, is performing what sounds like an original song about THON. Low point: failed ‘We Are’ serenade. High point: Commonwealth kids rocking out.

7:45 a.m. – A band is setting up on the stage even though the next one isn’t scheduled to play until 9:20. Dave Joyce and the Slow-Pitch Band must be some very prompt guys.

7:38 a.m. – The Color Wars Whack-a-Moraler sounds like the most violent (and awesome) game yet! It’s perfect for any dancers getting a little fed up with their moralers.

7:30 a.m. – Line dance time again!

7:08 a.m. – The Kiss Cam is back and randomly switching to Flex Cam mode so some macho men can show their stuff. Someone call a vet ’cause THOSE PUPPIES ARE SICK!

6:39 a.m. – Now the Singing Lions are putting on a show for us. They’re singing a medley of Disney music. Nostalgic!

6:31 a.m. – The step team just started an F-T-K chant, the BJC is chanting and clapping along with. They know how to work a crowd and put on a good show to boot!

6:27 a.m. – The Alpha Omega Step Team is stomping it out on stage and everyone seems to love it. They’re getting some pretty loud cheers.

6:09 a.m. – Now there’s that Firework cover we’ve been looking forward to! Cause baby you’re a fiiiiiiirewooooooork!

6:04 a.m. – They’re playing Don’t Stop Believing. We have a feeling this is another one of those songs we’re going to hear a lot more of this weekend – again, not that we’re complaining.

5:45 a.m. – The band just gave a shout-out to B 94.5 for its airplay of their original, Our Way, before launching into it.

5:36 a.m. – Almost everyone in the BJC is clapping along to the intro of Viva la Vida.

5:20 a.m. – 5 Cherry Lewis is getting started with a little Usher.

5:08 a.m. – The Line Dance serves as the opening act for 5 Cherry Lewis. Tough shoes to fill if you ask us.

4:55 a.m. – Looks like 5 Cherry Lewis is getting set up on stage.

4:42 a.m. – “Ridin’ Solo” brings some needed energy to the crowd. Well the chorus anyway…

[nggallery id=thon-sat]

4:29 a.m. – THON be gettin’ jiggy wit it, big willy style y’all.

4:18 a.m. – Time to stretch out those legs, dancers. Can you imagine a better workout than one led by The Fitness Instructors accompanied by Eric Prydz “Call on Me”?

4:15 a.m. – “Space Jam” clips with poorly constructed voice-overs for THON? Absolutely.

4:03 a.m. – It is safe to say that Nick and Ryan are champions of this year’s line dance.

3:58 a.m. – “Morale Captains to the stage!!”

3:56 a.m. – Why does everyone smell like baby powder? That would be slides of strength.

3:39 a.m. -“Cotton-Eyed Joe” with a little bit of dub keeps the dancers going as well as the students in the stands.

3:19 a.m. – Penn State acapella group Blue in the FACE dedicate The Little Mermaid’s “Kiss the Girl,” to a Four Diamonds child who is unable to attend THON.

3:08 a.m. – “It’s not for the glory, it’s for the kids,” Rap-duo Sahba & Tyrone spat in the debut of their “THON Theme Song.”

3:00 a.m. – Time for another line dance. Onward State’s Nick Johnson has this down pat now.

2:46 a.m. – Round 2 of Don’t Forget the Lyrics: Brian is first up with Bruno Mars’s “Just the Way You Are.”

2:32 a.m. – ΔX and KKΓ leading a robust olé chant.

Photo: Nick Johnson

2:01 a.m. – Alyssa Sweeney, Maxine Parker (in the suit), and Rachel Velecina of Ohana.

1:51 a.m. – Not seeing as many Moralers with mohawks as last year. They’re still there though.

1:35 a.m. – …Thrillllllllllerrrrrrrrrrr!

1:33 a.m. – Color wars resumes with the THONcation Vacation.

1:31 a.m. – Lowjack ends their set with The Charlie Daniels Band’s “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” The fiddle playing is all you could hope for and more.

Photo: John O'Brien

1:14 a.m. – Someone in Section 106 has giant cutouts of Betty White’s head and Carlos’s head from The Hangover.

12:58 a.m. – Thanks to a setup backstage, dancers can now go do what they normally would on a Friday night/Saturday morning: play Rock Band.

12:44 a.m. – Lowjack is kicking off the live band set with Johnny Cash’s classic “Folsom Prison Blues”.

12:26 a.m. – Now we have a flex cam, which the crowd is much more enthusiastic about.

12:24 a.m. – Kiss cam makes the rounds, and after a bit of time, successfully.

12:23 a.m. – The BJC is clapping along to the cowbell chant.

Photo: Mark Weaver

12:14 a.m. Morrrrrrale captains to the stage! Jump around!

12:09 a.m. – We’ve just had a string of questionable interesting music choices. First the Spice Girls, and now Whitney Houston (complete with a video full of big hair). Aaaaaand now Bad Romance. It was only a matter of time.
