THON 2011 Live Blog: Sunday

2:47 p.m. -After an emotional Family Hour, Go Go Gadget takes the stage as one of the last acts of the weekend.

1:47 p.m. – Charles Millard takes the mic: “I have never seen so much energy in #THON as I have this weekend.”

1:10 p.m. – Family Hour has come; make sure to bring some extra tissues for you and your friends.

1:01 p.m. – A video montage of past Four Diamonds kids called “Where Are They Now.” It’s starting to get emotional and family hour is on deck.

12:51 p.m. -After some rowdy fight songs to get the dancers re-energized, another water social is beginning.

12:45 p.m.- And the first prize winner of a new car is Pat Smith! Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all those that bought raffle tickets to support @THON

12:44 p.m.-  The winner of an 11-day trip to Europe Janet Capellago!

12:40 p.m. – The winner of a new Dell Latitude Laptop is…Christina Peters. Congratulations!

12:31 p.m. – All captains to the stage; I wonder what this could mean…Let’s hope you know the dance by now, if not, you only have three more tries!

12:28 p.m. – Now it’s time for last year’s (2010) line dance to return to the BJC.

12:20 p.m. – 2009’s line dance is performed almost flawlessly (from the upperclassmen, of course).

11:49 a.m.- The Internet in the Bryce Jordan Center has been failing this morning, but we’re back at it with live-blogging action! JR and Natalie Band are on stage right now. This is (amazingly) their 25th THON appearance. The crowd is clapping along. Lots of energy building in here.

11:00 a.m. – It’s amazing the amount of energy these dancers have. 41 hours left and still going!

10:59 a.m. – Stretch it out!

10:51 a.m. – The highlight of last year’s variety show, Tucker Haas, is singing the Black Eyed Peas’ “Time of My Life.”

9:58 a.m. – Balloons are being set up for part 2 of the “THONing for the Stars” variety show. Get ready for more cute kids demonstrating their many talents.

9:39 a.m. – Crank that Soulja Boy!

9:36 a.m. – Everyone’s doin’ the “Cupid Shuffle” by Flo Rida

9:24 a.m. – False alarm folks, no line dance. It’s actually Sugar Hill Gang’s “Apache” for realz this time.

9:20 a.m. – This place is a rave! “Sandstorm” is on.

8:55 a.m. – We’re all Tubthumping here. I don’t actually know what that means.

8:42 a.m. – Dance Troupe Tapestry has taken the stage in twirling, jumping and highstepping feats.

8:34 a.m. – Did anyone else see DJ Larry Moore’s sweet moves inside the DJ booth just now?

8:29 a.m. – It’s electric! Boogie-woogie-woogie-woogie.

8:20 a.m. – Dancers get piggybacks from moralers to give their feet a rest.

8:10 a.m. – We captured a photo of the FOX News Van, here for FOX and Friends live broadcast.

8:08 a.m. – We Are chants are already starting spontaneously.

8:01 a.m. – You know what that sound means! Gather around, boys and girls, it’s line dance time.

7:52 a.m. – They are playing Hey Ya.

7:44 a.m. – Every bro’s heart just skipped a beat. They’ve begun that familiar beat with the ska rhythm guitar we all know as Santeria.

7:36 a.m. – They’re getting some faint and scattered cheers as they begin to dig into Say It Ain’t So. And of course, everyone sings along to the chorus. Or at least the “Say it ain’t so” parts.

7:30 a.m. – Every cover band that uses horns ever always feels the need to cover Mighty Mighty Bosstones’ Impression That I Get. Not that we’re complaining.

7:22 a.m. – After some Barenaked Ladies they’re jumping into Black Eyed Peas. These guys diversify.

7:20 a.m. – A shot of the  moon still visible over the BJC on the last morning of THON weekend:

7:15 a.m. – Brew Devils take the stage with a cover of Yellow. Coldplay ftw.

7:12 a.m. – Brew Devils are doing sound check.

6:58 a.m. – Fresh Prince theme? What a change of pace, Shades. And pulling it off wonderfully, too!

6:47 a.m. – Wow, Shades of Blue is impressive in this wailing gospel nursery rhyme medley!

6:44 a.m. – And the winner is… the ladies!
[nggallery id=thontres]

6:38 a.m. – And now the ladies.

6:33 a.m. – Morale captains, men only. It’s on.

6:14 a.m. – GREEN WINS IT! GREEN HAS WON THE COLOR WARS! Final: Green, Red, Orange, Blue

6:09 a.m. – Shout for your color for the shout-o-meter in the Flag Parade. TRIPLE POINTS!!!

6:06 a.m. – Green jumps in the standings to first: Green, Red, Orange, Blue, with one last event in the works.

5:58 a.m. – Current Color Wars standings are Red, Orange, Blue, and Green in last.

5:53 a.m. – Monster Inc. Door Switch is apparently The Dating Game with a monstrous twist.

5:41 a.m. – MORALE CAPTAINS TO THE STAGE! Another line dance everybody.

5:33 a.m. – Legend of the Hidden Temple has begun. Assemble your monkey shrines!

5:30 a.m. – Kids are super cute! And right now, THON kids are giving video shoutouts to the dancers and the organization on the big screens. Cute + thankful is a powerfully adorable combination.

5:18 a.m. – Penn State Fitness Instructors are leading dancers in a little stretch/warmup to keep them limber.

5:10 a.m. – Ladies and gentlemen, line dance time.

5:07 a.m. – IFC/Panhellenic Org members are on stage.

5:05 a.m. – The Lion King just became Stomp.

4:59 a.m. – Give it up for members of Sigma Chi and Zeta Tau Alpha serenading us with songs of the African plains. That’s right, music of the Lion King!

4:53 a.m. – Aww… That’s all the Monty for now, folks.

4:51 a.m. – Always look on the bright side of life! Doo-doo, doo-doo doo-doo doo-doo!

4:45 a.m. – Of course, they start off with the one song in this musical that could be mistaken for something serious. At least this girl can sing.

4:44 a.m. – We’re about to be treated to a performance of Monty Python’s Spamalot! Let’s follow King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table on their quest for the Holy Grail.

4:42 a.m. – Cheers erupt and the crowd starts to clap along to Better Off Alone by Alice Deejay.

4:30 a.m. – The crowd here in the BJC is singing along to select songs in a Grease medley.

[nggallery id=marcus2]

3:57 a.m. – As we near 12 hours to go, The Nightcrawlers switch to country music. Hospitality is getting food ready for an early-morning snack for the dancers.

3:46 a.m. – More Color Wars. This time it’s Happy THONadays! The rules–who knows?

3:28 a.m. – The Nightcrawlers start their set. The crowd isn’t getting into it. Obviously, The Nightcrawlers should have started with a Ke$ha cover.

3:18 a.m. – Another kiss cam scans the crowd. Yet again, it’s only moderately successful. Plenty of kissing on the cheek, but no lip-to-lip contact.

3:08 a.m. – The Nightcrawlers are setting up for a late-night performance.

2:57 a.m. – We are not allowed to bring coffee into the BJC. There is also no place to buy coffee within the BJC. Sad times here at press row.

2:46 a.m. – And…the Mail Call finally starts.

2:41 a.m. – Before delivering the mail, a video about old fads is being shown. Furby is number one? How does Furby beat out Pokémon? This selection was rigged.

2:39 a.m. – The bags for Mail Call have reached the dance floor.

2:26 a.m. – “Barbie Girl” and “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” are played in succession. That goes back to elementary school for most college students. Some more dancer shout-outs follow.

2:17 a.m. – Line dance number something. Still looking good despite the fatigue that’s surely setting in.

2:05 a.m. – “Beat It” by Michael Jackson. [Insert inappropriate joke here.]

2:02 a.m. – Only 14 hours left in THON 2011. The end is near!

1:51 a.m. – Endless excitement here at THON! It’s mopping time!

1:48 a.m. – A student walked by, wondering if he could get on the site because he had FTK written into his beard. Here’s a shout-out to you, FTK-beard-man.

1:38 a.m. – As part of Color Wars, the teams are now wrapping moralers in toilet paper in an effort to mummify them. Lauren Feinstein: “Egypt is still in turmoil as the dancers mummify their moralers for color wars activities!”

1:22 a.m. – Orchesis was good, but having to hear Katy Perry for the umpteenth time took away from the performance.

1:17 a.m. – Well RAM Squad was out of this world. Orchesis Dance Company has a tough act to follow.

1:04 a.m. – RAM Squad takes the stage and shows off  their impressive dance skills.

12:55 a.m. – My Hero Zero finishes up with a medley of songs. Overall, the crowd seemed to really enjoy the performance.

12:45 a.m. – Every few songs, My Hero Zero is interrupted so that dancers can go get their midnight snack. The food the dancers are given looks much healthier than the food in press row.

12:39 a.m. – David Adewumi has joined us on press row. We are honored by his presence.

[nggallery id=thon-marcus]

12:29 a.m. – My Hero Zero becomes approximately the 8 millionth band to cover a Journey song, but it’s “Any Way You Want It,” not “Don’t Stop Believing.” The covers have kept the BJC rocking, but we’re left with one question–does anyone make original music anymore?

12:23 a.m. – Every time I hear “Jump Around,” I get prepared to do the line dance–but it’s just a nice song to listen to when My Hero Zero plays it. A Pavlovian disruption, if you will.

12:16 a.m. – My Hero Zero performs a sing-a-long: “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi.

12:07 a.m. – My Hero Zero takes the stage to start off the Sunday action.

12:01 a.m. – Welcome to Onward State’s third day of THON coverage.
