Trend Alert: “Blue and White” Raps

Penn State is know for school pride. Students and alum boast their Nittany Lions love with overpriced university merchandise, cocky remarks to family members attending other institutions and starting “We are” chants in crowded places. However, the newest trend in douchey, self-inflated fanhood is in the form of hip hop.

Wiz Khalifa annoyed every Green Bay Packers fan with his smash hit “Black and Yellow,” a single released last fall. The song was heard at every Super Bowl party at least once and it became adopted by boastful Pittsburgh residents as their hometown anthem.

Beside topping Billboard’s Top 100, “Black and Yellow” rippled into remixes that popped up for every random sports team that someone who just happened to rap was a fan of. Penn Staters weren’t immune.

The “Blue and White” remix craze has swept the vomit-stained streets of State College. Everyone with a rhyme book and a mic on their laptop thinks that they can rep their school colors by laying down a rap. If Playboy‘s ranking didn’t get you in the school spirit, here is a list of all of the Penn State raps to obnoxiously blast at your next party.

Maserati Mo – “White and Blue”

It’s hard to rap about a college without sounding cliche but Maserati Mo wasn’t what made this remix bad. My beef occurred after his highly anticipated video turned out to be a cheesy flop. The Hangover inspired sequence that was recorded at the Mezzanine, did little more than alert every other college that Penn State can’t dance. The Bacardi models were a nice touch, tough.

Dibs – “Nittany Lions(Black and Yellow Remix)”

Dibs on Dibs making the cheesiest remix out there. With whack lyrics and the vocals that are about as G as Steve from Blues Clues, this is truly a flop. How can I have school spirit with weak lines like, “when we step out on the field, that’s somethin’?” Come on, man! At least he got down the syllable count. Blue and White is only 3 syllables, while Nittany Lions mirrors the 4 syllable chorus of the original song. However, Dibs’ attention to detail doesn’t make his rap any more credible.

Pint – “Blue and White Penn State Anthem”

OS wrote an article about Pint’s remix a few months back, before the rap trend got into full swing. This spin on the school pride hip hop actually gets you pumped to go to Penn State. There are smartly worded shout outs to downtown hot spots like Canyon and 797 Lounge(R.I.P). He even sneaks in a historic speech by our beloved, Joe Pa. This dude’s reppin’ blue and white from his hoodie to his sweatpants.

Saint Assassin – “PSU Rap”

This isn’t actually a “Black and Yellow” remix, it’s just really really bad. The blue banana and gas-station bought sunglasses go nicely with the Bellfonte road sign in the background.

I hope you enjoyed your daily over-dose of school pride. If there are any other remixes out there, send them my way.

And don’t let my bashing dissuade anyone who wants to rep State in a short-lived hip hop career. If you feel the Blue and White pulsing in your veins, rap it out. Just choose a different beat to go over, please.
