The Nittany Lions baseball team went 3-1 on the week including a series win over rival Ohio State over the weekend.

Penn State 24-13, 7-5 Big Ten, hosted Maryland last Tuesday night picking up a 4-2 win. Neal Herring’s 4.1 innings of scoreless relief kept the Terps in check as the Lions produced enough offense to pull out a victory.

Friday evening’s game against Ohio State was canceled due to rain making Saturday’s contest a doubleheader.

In the first half of Saturday’s twin bill the squad dropped a 5-1 loss but recovered quickly to pick up a 5-2 win in the second half. John Walter allowed just one earned run while striking out five over eight innings on the hill. Sean Deegan and Luis Montesinos paced the Lions with three hits each on the afternoon.

In Sunday’s rubber match of the series, Penn State’s bats came alive edged out the Buckeyes in a 10-9 victory. Joey DeBernardis had an explosive day for the Lions going 3-for-3 with three RBI’s and three runs scored.

The Lions have eclipsed their win total of 22 from last season with a month remaining. They are currently in a three-way tie for first place in the Big Ten with Michigan State and Purdue. If the team can continue to have success they will be poised to make a run in the Big Ten tournament and perhaps even earn a bid to the NCAA tournament.

The Lions finished up their last two games of the home stand with La Salle tomorrow evening at 6:05 and Bucknell the following night. This weekend the squad will head to East Lansing for a three-game set with Big Ten co-leader Michigan State.
