Penn State University was founded in 1855 to be a “land-grant” university. Now, more than 150 years later, our university tops lists as the most expensive public school in America. However, one key factor that those ranking systems, as well as many students, miss is the fact that Penn State is not a public university, it’s currently “state-related.” With Governor Corbett’s recent announcement of a 30% cut in state appropriations, now is the time for Penn State to make the official switch to being a public school.

As the 2012 edition of State Patty's Day nears, bars-and how they elect to go about the day- will be a heavy topic if conversation. Last night, the Tavern Association of State College met to discuss plans for downtown establishments come February 25th.
It's February and THON is just around the corner. And we all know what that means: State Patty's Day is lurking right behind it. There has been a lot of discussion over the last several years about the harms this "holiday" brings along with the drinking and merriment, including the potential disgrace to the reputation of our school and community. But this year, that concern takes on a whole new tone. So we at Onward State want you to take a moment and ask yourselves, "Do I care about the image of Penn State?"
To see what downtown realtors had planned for this day of revelry, staff members of Onward State called their offices multiple times during the past week. The realtors declined to provide us information as to whether any action will be taken to restrict or prevent excessive partying on State Patty’s Day.
