Penn State Events During the UVA-PSU Game

This weekend, the Penn State football team travels to Charlottesville, Virginia, home to the University of Virginia Cavaliers, also known as the Wahoos.

In case you’re wondering, The University of Virginia’s Q&A section states the following about the aforementioned “Wahoo:”

Although the Cavalier is the official mascot of the University, the Cavaliers are also often referred to as the Wahoos. Legend has it that Washington and Lee baseball fans dubbed the Virginia players “Wahoos” during the fiercely contested rivalry that existed between the two in-state schools in the 1890s. By 1940, “Wahoos” was in general use around the Grounds to denote University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated “Hoos” sprang up later in student newspapers and has gained growing popularity in recent years.

With that said, if you’re planning on making the five(ish) hour trip down to Scott Stadium this weekend, there are some events happening for Penn State alumni, fans, and students, courtesy of the Penn State Alumni Association.

At 7 p.m., there will be an alumni mixer at McGrady’s Irish Pub until 9 p.m. where Penn Staters who are traveling from all over the country can meet up. The pub does cater to the UVA crowd, but has some items on their menu Pennsylvanians can enjoy, such as J.D.’s Pittsburghers, various types cheesesteaks and even the Penn Stater (also known as “Kristin’s) Burger. It was also voted “Number One Happy Hour” in Charlottesville.

On game day, the Pep Rally Tent will open at 9 a.m., with the day’s festivities starting at 10. The tent will be located on the corner of Alderman and McCormick Road. The pep rally will feature the Penn State Cheerleaders, the Nittany Lion, the Pep Band and other fun-filled activities to get the day rolling before the kickoff at noon. Refreshments will be available.

Before you do make the trek to Charlottesville, don’t forget to check out the University’s travel site for more information about parking, places to stay (if you don’t already have a hotel room), and the best way to get there.
