Five Days Of TEDxPSU Begins This Week

Beginning Monday, TEDxPSU will celebrate five years as a student-run organization with a week-long event that will lead up to the theme and logo reveal for the 2015 conference.

TEDx stands for an independently run TED event, a global set of conferences featuring presentations and lectures under the slogan “Ideas Worth Spreading.” TED (which stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design) was founded in 1984 as a one-off event, with an annual conference that began in 1990 in Monterey, California. Since June 2006, “TED talks” have been offered for free viewing online through TED.com, having been viewed more than one billion times worldwide.

A number of exciting events and big reveals are planned for this year’s conference in University Park. Without further ado, here’s the schedule for #TEDxFive leading up to the day-long conference on Sunday, March 1, 2015.

Monday, Nov. 10 – “TED High Five,” Ground Floor HUB (12 p.m. – 2 p.m.)

Michael Pilato and TEDxPSU are partnering up to create a mural of hands of every student, faculty, and staff member on campus to celebrate the Penn State community. All are welcome to the HUB Monday afternoon to have their hands painted by Pilato and pasted on to a mural that will spell out TEDxPSU. They will then be asked to write on the mural the name of the person who pushes them. The final product will be showcased at the conference in March.

Tuesday, Nov. 11 – “TEDxPSU Salon – Equality,” Kunkle Lounge (7 p.m. – 9 p.m.)

TEDxPSU’s first salon of the school year will feature Dr. Jeanine Staples, Assistant Professor of Literacy and Language in the Language, Culture, and Society Program, who will be giving a talk on “Why We Haven’t Cured Racism Yet.” Food will be sponsored for RSVPs by India Pavilion, and the conversation after Dr. Staples’ talk will be moderated by the Penn State section of the National Council of Negro Woman (NCNW).

Thursday, Nov. 13 – “Theme Reveal,” Life Science Bridge (7 p.m. – 9 p.m.)

The theme for the TEDxPSU 2015 conference will be revealed on the bridge of the Life Science Building on Thursday evening. There will be refreshments, hors d’oeuvres, music by Keegan Tawa for RSVPs, and an interactive activity for attendees.

Friday, Nov. 14 – “Logo Reveal,” Ground Floor HUB (12 p.m. – 2 p.m.)

The reveal will begin with a “finish that lyric” competition that is open to the public to participate, as well as a prize for the winner of the competition that includes two tickets to the conference with two VIP food passes, two meet and greet tickets, two after party tickets, and the ultimate prize of revealing the logo for the year. Acapella group Shades of Blue will provide the music for the competition and participants, and a photo booth will be set up for the student body. Refreshments from Dickie’s BBQ will be provided, free of charge.

Get Out There And Meet People: CJ Doon’s Senior Column

Whether it’s natural curiosity or fear of the spotlight, I’m not sure, but I’ve always been more comfortable asking questions rather than answering them. Interviewing interesting people — friends, family, or strangers — is an enjoyable activity that I hope to turn into a living. At Penn State, I was afforded the opportunity to follow that passion — and then some.
