Man Killed In Traffic Accident On North Atherton

A man was killed on Monday afternoon in a traffic accident downtown, according to a news release from the State College Police Department.

Joel Reed was riding a motorized scooter northbound on North Atherton Street at 4:09 p.m. when a Mini Cooper driven by Kimberly Griffin turned left onto Park Avenue.

According to the release, witnesses told police the light on Atherton had just turned red prior to the crash. Reed was pronounced dead at Mount Nittany Medical Center and Griffin was reportedly not injured in the crash.

The intersection was closed for nearly an hour after the accident.

Penn State freshman Eva O’Brian was struck by a pickup truck while jogging at the same intersection on July 3, 2014. She succumbed to her injuries two weeks after the accident.

Police ask anyone who has information on the accident to contact them via phone at (814) 234-7150, by e-mail, or through an anonymous tip on their website.
