Former Penn State Stars Rocky Rodriguez and Maya Hayes Link Up For NWSL Goal

Rocky Rodriguez hasn’t had too rough of a transition from college soccer to the pro game. The National Championship game-winning goal scorer has made a serious impact in the National Women’s Soccer League with her new team, Sky Blue FC.

Rodriguez and Sky Blue FC hosted her former Penn State teammate Britt Eckerstrom’s team, the Western New York Flash. Making her fourth start of the season, Rodriguez finally got in the box score in Sky Blue FC’s match against the Flash.

The Costa Rican international won the ball in midfield and slipped a ball through the Flash defense to former Penn State women’s soccer star Maya Hayes. Hayes took a touch and buried the shot past the Flash keeper to put Sky Blue FC in the lead.

Hayes, who led Penn State to the 2012 College Cup Final during her junior season, has played for Sky Blue FC since she was drafted in the NWSL Draft first round before the 2014 season. She now has two goals on the season.

Penn State is showing its prowess for producing quality players in the United State’s top division of women’s soccer. The legends of the Nittany Lion’s program are just two of the number of players Penn State has sent to the league, such as Ali Krieger and Alyssa Naeher.

Maybe he finally opened that sports bar named after one of his photos, the Blurry Zamboni. Or he might just be eating chicken tenders and couch surfing. Anything’s possible.
