Michael Palm Speaks During Greek Hour

Michael Palm, THON child and member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, spoke about his battle with cancer and the impact that THON continues to have on his life.

At just six years old, Michael was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and began treatment at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. Michael said that at such a young age a big diagnosis like his didn’t mean much, but he does remember being greeted by a social worker who told him and his family about THON as soon as he arrived at Hershey.

Michael stressed how supportive the organization has been not only morally, but financially as well. He received three and a half years of treatment and his family never saw a single bill.

“From the first day, they have been absolutely incredible. They’ve been there for my major life events and most importantly they’ve supported me through my entire journey,” Michael said.

Since his remission in 2006, Michael knew he wanted to be a Penn Stater and to give back to the community that so generously helped him. Michael’s older sister was a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority where Michael was a THON child and he hoped to be a member of the paired fraternity.

As fraternity and sorority pairings shifted over the years, the original fraternity that THONed for Micheal dropped AZD, and they were re-paired with Sigma Phi Epsilon. Michael got his wish and is an now active member of Sig Ep. He praised the Greek community for the work they do for THON.

“It’s the Greek organizations here that started THON, and they were able to provide the funding,” he said. “I wouldn’t be here today without Greek organizations being here for the last 45 years. I can’t say enough to thank all of you.”

Before leaving the stage, Michael told the audience that when he had the opportunity to lead the ‘We Are’ chant ten years ago, he forgot something (we’re assuming it was the friendly thank you at the end). He went on to boost the moral in the BJC with our beloved chant done the right way.
