Before training camp even starts, Christian Hackenberg’s Raiders career is done.
Oakland waived the former Penn State quarterback only a few weeks — 21 days, to be exact — after he was traded to Oakland by the New York Jets. It appears the Raiders will hang onto Derek Carr as their starter with E.J. Manuel & Connor Cook battling it out for the No. 2 spot.
That was fast: The #Raiders have waived QB Christian Hackenberg, per the NFL’s transaction wire. That negates a trade from earlier this offseason. Oakland keeps its 7th round pick.

Oakland’s move essentially made its trade deal with the Jets null and void, so the Raiders took back the conditional seventh-round pick the Jets earned from the trade.
Though he was a second-round draft pick entering the league, Hackenberg’s two years with the Jets were largely uneventful, as he never played a snap and was inactive for much of last season.
In other news, Hackenberg recently proposed to his longtime girlfriend and Penn State women’s lacrosse alumna Tatum Coffey. At least he still has that going for him.
Hackenberg will likely enter free agency and could always get picked up by another team. Stranger things have happened.
