Big Ten Releases Conference-Only 2020 Football Schedules

The Big Ten officially released its updated conference-only football schedule Wednesday morning.

The updated slate of games resulted in a 10-game schedule for each conference team. Every team’s schedule consists of solely Big Ten opponents after the conference announced last month it would do away with non-conference games for all fall sports, including football.

Penn State football’s upcoming season will kick off on Saturday, September 5 when the Nittany Lions take on Northwestern at Beaver Stadium.

The Nittany Lions’ additional 10th game will be against Illinois on November 21. Before its schedule was reduced, Penn State already had plans to play Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Maryland, Rutgers, and Indiana, as well as western teams such as Iowa, Northwestern, and Nebraska.

Here’s a breakdown of Penn State’s updated 2020 schedule:

  • Vs. Northwestern — September 5
  • @ Indiana — September 12
  • @ Michigan — September 19
  • Vs. Michigan State — September 26
  • @ Rutgers — October 3
  • BYE WEEK — October 10
  • Vs. Maryland — Octobeer 17
  • Vs. Iowa — Octobee 24
  • @ Nebraska — October 31
  • Vs. Ohio State — November 7
  • BYE WEEK — November 14
  • @ Illinois — November 21

Additionally, the conference doubled-up bye weeks and added an “open week” on November 28 to give teams extra time and space to make up games that are potentially postponed.

Should the season continue as planned, the Big Ten Championship Game is set for December 5 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. However, thanks to the schedule’s flexibility, it could be pushed back all the way to December 19 if needed.

Earlier this summer, the Big 12 and ACC both released their respective 2020 football schedules. The former will play a 10-game season consisting of nine conference games and an additional non-conference home game, while the latter will take part in an 11-game schedule that ropes in independent Notre Dame.

To date, the NCAA hasn’t determined whether or not fall sports will continue as planned this fall or if championships will still take place. The organization is expected to vote on key aspects of the season later Wednesday.

So far, no known Penn State football student-athletes have officially opted out of the upcoming season. Late Tuesday night, Yahoo! Sports reported star linebacker Micah Parsons planned to opt out and enter the 2021 NFL Draft, but no official statement has been made.

Penn State hasn’t yet released plans to bring fans to Beaver Stadium this fall. Athletics said season ticket holders can expect an email with information regarding the upcoming season Thursday morning.

Penn State football will open preseason practice on Friday, August 7.
