Four-Star Tight End Holden Staes Decommits From Penn State Football

Penn State football’s recruiting Class of 2022 got a little bit smaller Friday morning when tight end Holden Staes announced he was decommiting from the Nittany Lions and reopening his recruitment.

“After much thought and reconsideration with my family and coaches, I have decided to de-commit from Penn State and reopen my commitment,” Staes wrote. “I want to thank Coach Franklin, Coach Bowen, and Coach Howle for the opportunity to play and represent an amazing program.”

The move comes after longtime Penn State tight ends coach Tyler Bowen took a job with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Since Bowen was one of the main people who likely recruited Staes, it would make sense for him to explore other options.

The four-star tight end received 24 offers from schools around the country before he committed to Penn State last August. Among those schools that provided him with offers were Ole Miss, Alabama, Ohio State, and Michigan.

Following Staes’ departure, Penn State’s Class of 2022 still ranks No. 4 in the country and No. 2 in the Big Ten, according to 247Sports. The class is headlined by prospects like four-star receivers Mehki Flowers and Kaden Saunders and four-star offensive tackle Drew Shelton.
