New Penn State Hoops Head Coach Micah Shrewsberry Arrives In Happy Valley
The “Shrews Crew” has arrived in Happy Valley.
Following Purdue’s 78-69 loss to North Texas in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday, Micah Shrewsberry has arrived in Happy Valley to officially start his tenure as Penn State men’s basketball’s new head coach.
The Indianapolis, Indiana native was officially hired as the new headman of the Nittany Lions’ program last Monday. He takes over for former interim head coach Jim Ferry, who was thrusted into the head coaching role following the resignation of long-time head coach Pat Chambers right before the start of the 2020-21 season.
Shrewsberry started his time in Happy Valley by taking a tour with his family around the Bryce Jordan Center. It included a tour of the men’s basketball wing of the arena, his first stop at his new office, and a look inside the BJC where he’ll be coaching the Nittany Lions next season.
Shrewsberry brings coaching experience from all different levels of the sport to Happy Valley. He spent time under current Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens at Butler, then with the Celtics in the NBA. Most recently, Shrewsberry was the offensive mastermind for the Purdue Boilermakers, who entered this years’ NCAA tournament as a No. 4 seed.
Shrewsberry has a tall task ahead of him as he tired and rebuild Penn State’s program. The Nittany Lions went 11-14 this season, missed the NCAA and NIT tournament, and had a mass exodus of players to the transfer portal last week.
