Former Penn State Football Tight End Zack Kuntz Transfers To Old Dominion

Zack Kuntz will now join his former offensive coordinator Ricky Rahne in Norfolk, Virginia.

The former Penn State football tight end announced via Twitter Sunday night that he’ll transfer to Old Dominion, where Rahne became the head coach shortly after the 2019 season. Kuntz entered the transfer portal this past February.

The Camp Hill, Pennsylvania native spent three seasons in Happy Valley. He arrived in the same class as Pat Freiermuth and was ranked as the No. 4 tight end in the nation. Despite earning more attention on the recruiting trail, Kuntz spent much of his time in a rotational role behind Freiermuth.

The 6’7″ tight end made three catches over the course of the 2018 and 2019 seasons worth 26 yards, but didn’t make any receptions in seven games played last fall.

Despite the former four-star recruit’s transfer, Penn State and its new tight ends coach Ty Howle has no shortage of depth in the group. With Freiermuth off to the NFL, Brenton Strange and Theo Johnson are poised to be key factors in 2021.

Strange made 17 grabs and scored twice as a redshirt freshman in 2020. Johnson didn’t get in the end zone as a true freshman, but impressed towards the end of the season by making four catches worth 56 yards in the final three games.

Kuntz now joins an Old Dominion group that was forced to cancel its 2020 campaign due to COVID-19 concerns. The Monarchs finished the 2019 season with a 1-11 record and eventually hired Penn State’s Rahne.
