Report: Lamar Stevens Signs Multiyear Deal With Cleveland Cavaliers

It looks like Lamar Stevens is here to stay in the NBA.

The former Penn State men’s basketball star is reportedly signing a multiyear deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. Stevens was previously playing on a two-way contract with the Cavs.

According to Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor, Stevens’ contract will stretch for four years, although only the remainder of the current season is guaranteed. A team option is built into the final year of his contract.

Stevens’ previous two-way deal let him split time between the G-League and NBA, although he spent most of his time in Cleveland. The new deal should give him an official spot on the 15-man roster.

After not being selected in the 2020 NBA Draft, the Nittany Lions quickly carved out a role for himself in Cleveland. He’s averaged 13.1 minutes, 4.4 points, and 2.5 rebounds as a rookie while shooting a tad over 45% from the field.

He’s already put together his share of highlight reel plays, too.

During his time in Happy Valley, Stevens solidified himself as one of Penn State’s best players of all time. Only the coronavirus pandemic could prevent him from becoming the top scorer in program history.

The Philadelphia native averaged 16.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per game as a Nittany Lion, earning first-team All-Big Ten honors during his junior and senior seasons.

The Cavaliers’ 19-34 record puts toward the bottom of the NBA’s Eastern Conference. While the playoffs are likely out of the picture this year, Cleveland has lots of young talent, including Stevens, that could put it back in contention in years to come.
