Recreating Onward State’s Best Sports Photos

Penn State is home to top-tier athletes, and Onward State is home to some top-tier photographers (Editor’s note: Biased, but I’ll allow it).

Last week, Penn State Athletics introduced the #CubClubChallege — an initiative similar to a trend that was popular on TikTok last summer where users would recreate old family photos. Instead, fans are encouraged to recreate their favorite Penn State Athletics snapshots.

To get in on the fun, we set out to recreate some of the most iconic Penn State sports photos in recent years and contribute to the challenge.

Our trusty photographer Annie Kubiak and I scoured thousands of Onward State sports photos from recent years and rounded up some of the best. Then, with the help of fellow staffers Jordan Mansberger and Anna Wiggins, we stretched, got loose, and channeled our inner Division I athletes to recreate those photos.

We started off our series of recreations strong with a photo that was admittedly hard to recreate. Some minor injuries occurred, but nothing we couldn’t handle for the blog.

If this were a real game, Penn State would have absolutely zero issues getting past Iowa’s defense. Our basketball skills aren’t up to par, so it’s likely that every move we make will be called a travel or double-dribble by the referee.

We must admit, the verticals that the women’s volleyball players can achieve are no easy task. Anna got pretty good at spiking the volleyball soccer ball in Pollock quad and easily shot down the opposing team over and over.

This was another photo that took many tries to get the perfect shot. Props to Pierre Reedy’s “soccer face” for still looking somewhat photogenic when heading the ball.

This photo may look easy to recreate, but it was surprisingly tough to capture. There were many moving parts involved. We needed to throw the ball at just the right angle and “run” towards the ball in a way that would result in our desired photo.

Wrestling is no easy sport, folks. We learned how awkward it is, too. This was just a warmup for our other wrestling remake later on…

Although Seth Lundy made it official that he would be staying at Penn State, we would’ve had Micah Shrewsberry covered if Lundy decided to transfer.

Ally Schlegel and her iconic pink headband needed to be included in our lineup. We didn’t have an exact replica, but we made do with a couple mismatched skinny headbands.

Lionettes kickline material. That is all.

We needed to save the best and most complex recreation for last. This one took a few tries to get perfect, especially because the first try resulted in me getting KO’d in front of the Millennium Science Complex. Despite my new back issues, our execution of this photo is pretty darn good.
