Penn State Women’s Soccer Acquires Boston Goalie Morgan Messner
Penn State women’s soccer secured a notable addition Tuesday by signing goalkeeper Morgan Messner.
Messner will join the Nittany Lions as a transfer from Boston University, where she made 27 appearances over three years. She missed only two starts in those seasons.
“I am extremely excited and grateful for this opportunity to join the Penn State women’s soccer family and continue my collegiate career with this distinguished and outstanding program,” Messner said in a release. “I have so much respect for this program, its history, and the people involved in it. It is an honor to join this team, and I cannot wait to be a part of something so special!”
Messner averaged an impressive .86 goals-against average, saving more than 80% of the shots she faced.
Messner, a native of Drexel Hill, had her best season as a freshman in 2018, which was the last campaign the Terriers qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Messner started in a scoreless draw that went the distance before losing 2-1 in a penalty shootout.
“Morgan brings a wealth of experience from a very respected program at Boston University,” Penn State head coach Erica Dambach said. “She has already proven to be one of the best goalkeepers in the country and we are excited to bring her into our group.”
Messner will compete with presumed starter Kat Asman for the No. 1 spot with the Nittany Lions. Katie Evans and incoming freshman Amanda Poorbaugh round out the options in the net for Penn State.
The Nittany Lions will start their upcoming season on August 19 against UMass.
