Staff Picks: Where We’re Taking Our Parents For Parents & Families Weekend

Parents and Families Weekend is back, baby! After a few months of settling into college, it’s finally time to show your folks around Happy Valley.

From touring Beaver Stadium to weekend brunch in the residence halls, there’s definitely no shortage of events this weekend. However, there’s always a few special places every student wants to go to when their parents come to town. Here are a few notable spots our staffers plan to take their parents this weekend.

Lauren Wysseier: Central Reservation

When my parents come to visit me at school, I already know where I want them to take me: Central Reservation. It is the kind of restaurant that’s a little too fancy to go to with your college friends. I always feel a little out-of-place walking past the restaurant after class. While the parents are in town, though, it’s a whole different story.

“I’ll take your most expensive dish, please. Thank you!”

Mom and Dad, if you’re reading this, please don’t cancel your flight to visit. Love you!

Grace Cunningham: Grocery Store, Dinner, Etc.

Although I opted to go home for Parents Weekend, if my parents were to come to town, I’d probably take them to Trader Joe’s so that they could buy me groceries. Then, I’d take them to Federal Taphouse so that they could also buy me dinner. Lastly, I’d take them to the intersection where a car backed into me to prove to them that it was not my fault.

Ava Brendgord: Bellisario Media Center

When I first walked into the Media Center, I felt like I was walking into Disney World for the very first time. It’s big, beautiful, and has everything I could possibly need as a communications student.

It’s amazing finally have a place on campus where I can work, study, and learn using all the new broadcasting equipment and technology. After a few months of taking full advantage of the space, I’m so excited to finally show it off to my parents when they visit!

Matt DiSanto: Faccia Luna

If my parents loved me enough to visit during Parents Weekend, I’d bring ’em to Faccia Luna, State College’s premier pizza joint.

Up on South Atherton, Faccia Luna serves up some of the best food in town. It’s also got a nice outdoor patio that makes it one of my favorite sit-down restaurants in the area. You know, that’s a real treat when you’re a student who’s used to dining hall meals or eating on the go. Getting the chance to really sit down with your folks, talk for a few hours, and enjoy a nice meal is really something.

Disclaimer: My parents do love me — they just hate coming up on Parents Weekend. However, they did just get a new dog without me, so I suppose the jury’s still out.

Dana Nunemacher: The Place You Threw Up Last Weekend

You know how to make your parents really proud? Show them that special spot where you puked your guts out after too many Natty Lights. Was it a bush? A frat bathroom? Maybe the sidewalk next to the Waffle Shop (not speaking from personal experience or anything)? They will be so proud of you for balancing your school life with extracurriculars!
