Penn State Safeties Coach Anthony Poindexter To Be Recognized For College Football Hall Of Fame Selection

Anthony Poindexter, Penn State football’s co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach, will receive an on-campus salute this weekend at Virginia’s Scott Stadium prior to his induction to the College Football Hall of Fame, as announced Monday.

Poindexter was previously announced as a member of the 2020 class of the College Football Hall of Fame, but the induction ceremony was cancelled due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Penn State’s defensive coach played safety for the Virginia from 1995 to 1998. In his time with the Cavaliers, Poindexter recorded 12 interceptions in 40 games.

Additionally, Poindexter earned two first-team All American nods, finalist honors for the Thorpe and Nagurski awards, and the 1998 ACC Defensive Player of the Year award. His No. 3 jersey was retired by UVA in 2009.

After his college days, Poindexter was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the seventh round of the 1999 NFL Draft. With the team, he took down the New York Giants for a victory in Super Bowl XXXV.

In his first season with the Nittany Lions, Poindexter has helped coordinate the defense back to its typical dominant status. So far this season, Penn State’s defense has allowed the eighth-least yards per play in the country, as well as only eight opposing touchdowns.

Other notable inductees set for similar on-campus salutes with their alma maters include SMU’s Eric Dickerson, LSU’s Glenn Dorsey, and Alcorn State’s Steve McNair.

Poindexter will officially be inducted on December 7, as the 2020 and 2021 classes are given their recognition in Las Vegas.
