Penn State Football Unveils Retro End Zones For ‘Generations Of Greatness’ Game

Penn State football has another trick up its sleeve for Saturday’s “Generations of Greatness” game against Illinois.

Along with the white cleats and snazzy jersey adjustments, the Nittany Lions announced Friday afternoon they’ll sport retro end zones for Saturday’s contest.

The end zone features blue and white diamonds that were a fixture of Beaver Stadium in the 1960s, 70s, and early 80s, along with a “PSU” logo right in the middle.

Penn State has held its “Generations of Greatness” game in every season but one since 2017. However, the checkered end zones haven’t been featured since the tradition first started against Indiana four years ago. Those blue and white diamonds looked especially perfect when Saquon Barkley returned the opening kickoff to the house against the Hoosiers — in a pair of white cleats, by the way.

Along with the retro end zones, Penn State’s throwback uniforms feature several changes, including numbers on helmets, striped pants and socks, and a Lion Shrine home plate, among several others. Check out all of them here.

The Nittany Lions will pay homage to the program’s history with those changes, while Saturday’s contest against the Fighting Illini will also serve as this year’s Homecoming game. The matchup will kick off at noon at Beaver Stadium and be broadcast on ABC.
