What The World Looked Like The Last Time Penn State Football Won In Columbus

Penn State football will head to Columbus to take on No. 5 Ohio State at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday.

Following a brutal loss to Illinois, the Nittany Lions are desperate to somewhat salvage their season by taking down the Buckeyes on their home turf, a feat they haven’t accomplished since 2011. Of course, the world was very different 10 years ago.

To put that winless decade into perspective, let’s take a look at what was going on in the world the last time the Nittany Lions were victorious in Columbus.

Prince William Had Just Married Kate Middleton

We tend to think that #107kStrong is a lot of people, but almost 2 billion people tuned in to watch the royal wedding in April 2011. That really puts things in perspective, doesn’t it?

The iPhone 4S Was Apple’s Newest Phone

Apple came out with its new and improved version of the iPhone 4 in October 2011. The phone was also the first to support Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant. Do you feel old yet?

Nintendo Introduced Its 3DS

Even though it wasn’t the first DS that Nintendo released, the debut of the 3DS still changed the game, as it was the first one to include a camera. Finally, you were able to flip from playing Mario Kart and take some high-quality pictures that would last a lifetime.

Tiny Wings Dethroned Angry Birds As The No. 1 Game In The App Store

Angry Birds is an all-time classic, but Tiny Wings deserves some recognition, too.

‘We Found Love’ By Rhianna Was The Top Song In The United States

Who could forget about this one? It doesn’t seem like ten years since this bop came out, but that’s the sad reality of it. Unfortunately, Rihanna’s only appearance at the Bryce Jordan Center came in 2007, so she has yet to bring her masterpiece of a song to Happy Valley.

Planking Was The Newest Fad

No, this isn’t the type of planking that you do at the gym. This dangerous popular trend was simple, yet addictive. People would have others snap photos of them planking all over the place and post it to social media. The phenomena even made its way to Happy Valley during Arts Fest in 2011.

The “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1” Opened In Theatres

Do you remember when the debate between #TeamEdward and #TeamJacob was one of the biggest disputes in our lives? Those were the good ol’ days. The movie premiered the night before Penn State’s 20-14 victory over Ohio State and made a whopping $138 million on opening weekend.

‘Friday’ By Rebecca Black Came Out

To put it lightly, not many people liked this song when it came out in 2011. The music video wasn’t much better, either. The video even surpassed Justin Bieber’s “Baby” as the most disliked YouTube video in 2011. (Side note: “Baby” didn’t, and still doesn’t, deserve the hate.)

Tom Bradley Was Penn State Football’s Head Coach

Not many people remember what happened in the two-month gap between Joe Paterno and Bill O’Brien, but the former Penn State defensive coordinator took over for Paterno as interim head coach in November 2011. In fact, Bradley’s first and only win as Penn State’s head coach was in Columbus, making him the last coach to beat the Buckeyes on their home turf. Maybe James Franklin will change that this weekend.
