Penn State’s Derrick Tangelo Declares For 2022 NFL Draft

After spending just one season in Happy Valley, Penn State defensive tackle Derrick Tangelo is heading to the big leagues.

By officially declaring for the 2022 NFL Draft on Wednesday, Tangelo is now the sixth Nittany Lion to opt out of Penn State’s Outback Bowl appearance.

“I couldn’t be more thankful for the support I have from my family, friends, and coaches,” Tangelo wrote in a statement. “A dream I’ve had since I was a child is now becoming a reality.”

Tangelo, who transferred to Penn State after spending four seasons with Duke, contributed immediately along the Nittany Lions’ banged-up defensive line. He racked up 29 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks across his lone season in Happy Valley.

Penn State’s defense is now without five starters heading into a matchup with No. 21 Arkansas. Starting linebackers Ellis Brooks and Brandon Smith were the first to declare for the draft, while safety Jaquan Brisker and defensive end Arnold Ebiketie followed up this week. On the other side of the ball, star receiver Jahan Dotson opted to skip the bowl game and begin preparing for the draft, too.
