ESPN Releases Trailer For E60 Documentary ‘The Paterno Legacy’

Ten years after the Sandusky child sex abuse scandal unfolded, ESPN released a trailer for a new E60 documentary about Joe Paterno’s legacy.

The two-minute trailer for “The Paterno Legacy” released on Sunday. It opens with Paterno mentioning that he’d like his epitaph to say he “had an impact” during an interview conducted the scandal. Then, it cuts to clips covering Paterno’s success at Penn State before showing his downfall following the scandal.

The trailer features Paterno’s son, Jay, Penn State legend Matt Millen, and even Angelo Di Maria, the sculptor of the iconic statue of Joe Paterno that once stood outside Beaver Stadium.

Jay Paterno has been outspoken about his father’s legacy throughout the last 10 years, so it’s likely he’d play an active role in the documentary’s final cut.

“I look at my father, and I see a guy who is a revered patriarch,” Jay Paterno said in the trailer.

ESPN’s John Barr was on-hand at a James Franklin post-practice press conference in November and asked two questions about Paterno’s legacy. Franklin’s response was even featured in the trailer released this weekend.

The ESPN documentary is set to release four years after HBO’s “Paterno”, a biopic that takes place in the weeks after Sandusky’s arrest and is framed by flashbacks. “Paterno” ultimately received poor reviews from Penn Staters.

This past September, “Saving The Roar”, a documentary about the 2012 Penn State football team, was released to the public, too. Similarly, it focused on the lives of the legendary Nittany Lions squad that persevered through the fallout of the Sandusky Scandal.

ESPN’s “The Paterno Legacy” will premiere at 8 p.m. on Monday, April 18. It’ll play on ESPN and be available through streaming on ESPN+.
