Sean Clifford Named Rose Bowl Game Big Ten Player Of The Week
Sean Clifford is racking up the accolades, folks.
After leading Penn State’s game-winning drive against Purdue, the sixth-year quarterback has been named the week one Rose Bowl Game Big Ten Player of the Week. This is the second time Clifford has received the recognition in his career, as he got the same nod back in 2019, which also came after a victory over Purdue.
Each week, the Rose Bowl Game chooses the player of the week from both the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences. On the other side of the recognition is Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who was the signal caller for Indiana when Penn State lost a heartbreaker in Bloomington during the 2020 season.
Clifford had himself quite the performance in Penn State’s 35-31 win over Purdue Thursday night. The Cincinnati native completed 20 passes on 37 attempts, throwing for 282 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for 11 yards and recorded a rushing touchdown, as well.
It wasn’t a perfect game for Clifford, though, as he went on a cold streak after briefly missing one drive in the game due to cramping. He threw a costly pick-six midway through the fourth quarter, and it seemed like the Nittany Lions were doomed. But Clifford came through in the clutch and led an eight-play, 80-yard drive in just 1:25 to throw the game-winning touchdown for the Nittany Lions.
Penn State will host Ohio University at noon this Saturday, September 10 in its home-opener at Beaver Stadium. The game will be televised on ABC.
