OS Reviews: The Field’s ‘Coach’s Corner’
Who doesn’t love a good burger?
We at Onward State sure do. The Field, which is known for its burgers, is located at 1 Country Club Lane at the Toftrees Golf Resort. It’s about a 10 to 15-minute drive from campus depending on the time of day.
The Field’s menu features a “Coach’s Corner” section, which includes five burgers created by Penn State sports coaches. Football’s James Franklin, men’s basketball’s Micah Shrewsberry, field hockey’s Charlene Morett-Curtiss, women’s basketball’s Carolyn Kieger, and men’s hockey’s Guy Gadowky all have their own burger at the restaurant.
Naturally, five of our staffers took a trip to The Field to each try one of the signature burgers.
Mikey DeAngelis: The ShrewsBurger
Peanut butter on a burger? Sounds absurd, but honestly, it was pretty good! Other than the addition of the peanut butter, this is a standard cheeseburger, and it’s good. The burgers at The Field are always high quality, and the peanut butter didn’t really take away or add too much to the overall flavors of the burger. If anything, it added a nutty, salty layer of flavor. I’d recommend it.
Tobey Prime: The Coach Franklin
I’m not going to lie. I was pleasantly surprised with this burger.
The Coach Franklin consists of a turkey burger, arugula, tomato, olive tapenade, and goat cheese on a whole wheat roll. I’m not a big tomato guy, I never heard of olive tapenade, and I never tried goat cheese. However, when I took my first bite, my taste buds screamed with joy.
I immediately tasted the goat cheese, which gave me blue cheese vibes, but I was a huge fan. I didn’t taste the olive tapenade at all, so I’m convinced it isn’t a real thing. However, this burger was so damn good that I didn’t even taste the tomatoes. Overall, I’m very impressed with Franklin’s ability to put together a burger.
As another pleasant surprise, this was the cheapest burger among all the signature burgers. So, if you’re looking for a quality meal at a low price, The Coach Franklin is the way to go.
Ryan Parsons: Char-Cuterie
The only meat listed on the Char-Cuterie, named after field hockey coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss, was salami, which confused me at first. Is it just a bunch of salami on a brioche? Kinda awesome, but also kinda weird. But, I was wrong. It was a traditional burger, and boy, was it delicious.
The salami was complimented by Brie cheese, arugula, dijonnaise, and tomatoes to mock a classic charcuterie board. It was unique and oh-so rich, fit with a toothpick with some extra meat, cheese, and an olive as well. This might just be my go-to.
Frankie Marzano: The Big Gadowsky
This burger felt like a match made in heaven. I mean, who could’ve thought that pirogies on a burger could taste so good? It may sound like an odd combination, but it was delicious. The sour cream also added a nice touch that I didn’t expect. I really wanted to pair it with the All Day IPA that Guy Gadowsky recommends, but Onward State managing editor Gabe Angieri hasn’t turned 21 yet. (Editor’s Note: Sad!)
Gabe Angieri: Coach Kieger’s “Juicy Lucy”
Boy, this burger was juicy alright.
Going in, I was a little skeptical because I’m not the biggest fan of tomatoes. The burger featured Eleven Oaks Wagyu stuffed with American cheese, leaf lettuce, tomato, sautéed onions, candied bacon, and chipotle aioli on a pretzel roll. If I were just ordering this on a random occasion and not for a review, I probably would’ve removed the tomato, but for the sake of authenticity, I left it all in there.
To my surprise, I couldn’t even taste the tomato. All the other delicious flavors overshadowed the tomato, which was a huge win for me. As a big burger guy, this was like a match made in heaven, to echo Frankie’s sentiment. It may even be my go-to next time I go to The Field.
