Penn State Men’s & Women’s Soccer Earns Collection Of Big Ten Weekly Awards

It’s been quite a week for Penn State men’s and women’s soccer.

Both teams are back in the United Soccer Coaches Poll for the first time since the preseason as the men’s team checked in at No. 20 nationally, while the women’s team jumped to No. 6. Each squad has gone undefeated in conference play as they break into a consistent Big Ten schedule. Now, more awards are starting to pile in for the Nittany Lions.

For head coach Jeff Cook’s squad, defender Tyger Evans nabbed the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award. The junior tallied one goal and two assists in the team’s ranked matchups against then-No. 9 Maryland and then-No. 15 Akron.

Evans assisted teammate and co-captain Peter Mangione to grab a 2-1 lead over Maryland. The outside back also ended up converting a penalty kick in the 74th minute to tie the Terrapins at three-all and earn one point for the match in College Park.

The following week against Akron, Evans assisted Liam Butts in the game-winning goal over the ranked opponent.

On the women’s side, three Nittany Lions received Big Ten weekly honors.

Goaltender Katherine Asman was named Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week after producing two clean sheets against then-No. 4 Rutgers and Illinois.

The redshirt senior posted six saves against the offensive powerhouse Scarlet Knights and ended their 9-0 undefeated season. She also made three saves against the Illini and closed out her sixth clean shutout of the year.

Mieke Schiemann collected Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors after combining with Asman to manufacture the two shutouts. The Berlin, Germany, native played every minute of the team’s match against Rutgers.

Lastly, Penelope Hocking earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after netting a goal against Rutgers and a brace against Illinois. Hocking’s first goal against the Illini came in the 34th second of the match.

This is the transfer’s first career Big Ten award following her move from the PAC-12’s USC.
