Carolina Panthers Fire Former Penn State Linebacker Matt Rhule
The Carolina Panthers have fired former Penn State football linebacker Matt Rhule from his position as head coach, the team announced Monday morning.
The change comes after the Panthers fell to 1-4 with a 37-15 loss to the 49ers on Sunday. Secondary coach Steve Wilks will serve as Carolina’s interim head coach.
Rhule compiled an 11-27 record with the Panthers since taking over as their head coach in January 2020. The Penn Stater had originally signed a seven-year, $62 million contract with Carolina.
Prior to his time with the Panthers, Rhule was a head coach at the college level for seven years. From 2013 to 2016, he helped turn around a Temple program that went 2-10 in his first year at the helm. In his final season with the Owls, Temple boasted a 10-3 record.
Similarly, after going 1-11 in his first year with Baylor in 2017, Rhule flipped the narrative for the Bears and led the squad to an 11-3 record in his final season in 2019.
Rhule played linebacker at State College Area High School before walking onto the Penn State football team in 1994. He played four years under Joe Paterno and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 1997.
It’s too soon to speculate what’s next for Rhule, but another college head coaching job could be in his future. According to The Athletic‘s Nicole Auerbach, Rhule will be “coveted” by Power 5 schools looking for head coaches this cycle.
