Penn State Hoops Announces Captains For 2022-23 Season

Penn State men’s basketball announced its four captains for the 2022-23 campaign Thursday morning.

The group of four upperclassmen are listed below:

  • Seth Lundy (fourth-year, guard/forward)
  • Jalen Pickett (fifth-year, guard)
  • Myles Dread (fifth-year, guard/forward)
  • Andrew Funk (fifth-year, guard)

With seven seasons of collective experience in Happy Valley, both Lundy and Dread earned captain distinctions in what will likely be both of their last go-arounds with second-year head coach Micah Shrewsberry.

As a junior, Lundy finished his latest campaign as the Nittany Lions’ second-leading scorer by posting 11.9 points per outing behind nearly a 35% conversion clip from beyond the arc. Additionally, the Philadelphia native emerged as one of the Big Ten’s premier defenders, holding primary guarding opponents to under 10 points per game.

Similarly to Lundy’s longstanding pedigree with Penn State, Dread is prepped to enter his fifth season in the blue and white as the longest-tenured Nittany Lion on the roster. With 117 games of on-court experience, Dread has drained 232 career three-pointers, good for the fifth-most in program history.

Aside from the two mainstays, Pickett and Funk have both entered into the fold as captains as former transfer commodities. Last season, Pickett impressed during his first season under Shrewsberry’s tutelage, where he led Penn State in points, assists, and steals over his initial campaign in Happy Valley.

For Funk, the former Bucknell leading scorer is poised to enter Shrewsberry’s starting lineup with over 1,230 career points at the off-guard position. With 195 career assists and 346 rebounds worth of production, Funk is poised to carry four years worth of work in the Patriot League into the Big Ten.

The Nittany Lions will begin their regular-season slate at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 7, in the Bryce Jordan Center against Winthrop. The matchup is set to air live on BTN+.
