Penn State Offensive Lineman Landon Tengwall Undergoes Season-Ending Surgery

Offensive lineman Landon Tengwall will miss the remainder of the 2022 season with an undisclosed injury, as announced by head coach James Franklin at his weekly press conference Tuesday.

“As you know I won’t really talk about injuries unless I talked to the young man first about it,” Franklin said. “Landon [Tengwall] did have surgery and will be out for the remainder of the year.”

“He’s been a class act both on and off the field. I think he’s got a very, very bright future,” Franklin continued. “Obviously, you hate these types of setbacks.”

In Penn State’s first five games this year, Tengwall started at left guard. As the Nittany Lions prepared for their road matchup with Michigan, Tengwall was injured during pregame warmups.

“It happening in pregame right before the game, I do think that was something that we needed to learn from,” Franklin said. “Something like this may happen and we got to…respond quickly, and I don’t know if we necessary did with his initially.”

Following Tengwall’s injury, Franklin refused to specify the nature of the offensive lineman’s ailment, but he left the door open for a potential return. Most recently, Tengwall was not included on Penn State’s travel roster, when the team traveled to Indiana.

Through Tengwall’s absence, Hunter Nourzad has slotted in at the starting left guard position. Nourzad, who announced his intent to return for next season Tuesday, had been splitting time with Tengwall at guard predating the injury.

In relief of Nourzad, redshirt sophomore JB Nelson also saw playing time at left guard last week against Indiana.

The Nittany Lions are currently dealing with multiple injuries on the offensive line, including to starting left tackle Olu Fashanu and starting right tackle Caedan Wallace. With his experience operating as a swing tackle, Tengwall was a logical solution to those troubles. But with his own season-ending injury, that is obviously not an option.
