Former Penn State Linebacker Matt Rhule Named Nebraska’s Head Coach
That didn’t take too long.
Former Penn State linebacker Matt Rhule has been hired by the University of Nebraska to serve as its head coach, as announced by the team Saturday morning. The Cornhuskers fired previous head coach Scott Frost in October after a 1-2 start.
Rhule will be officially introduced during a press conference on Monday, where more details about his eight-year contract will be announced.
“When you think of great, tradition-rich programs in college football Nebraska is right at the top of the list,” Rhule said. “The fan base is second to none and I consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to coach in Memorial Stadium on Tom Osborne Field.”
Rhule’s new landing spot arrives just one month after he was fired by the Carolina Panthers from the same position.
With Carolina, Rhule only managed an 11-27 record as the team rotated a carousel of quarterbacks. Rhule assumed the role in January 2020, signing a seven-year, $62 million contract.
Before leaping into the NFL, Rhule served as the head coach of Temple and Baylor. Rhule first served as Temple’s head coach from 2013 to 2016 before subsequently spending three seasons with Baylor.
In Rhule’s first season at Temple, the Owls went just 2-10. Under Rhule’s leadership, the team eventually improved to 10-3 prior to his departure. His tenure at Baylor followed a similar trajectory, improving from 1-11 in his first season to 11-3 in his last with the Bears.
Before walking on to Penn State’s football team, Rhule played linebacker for State College Area High School. From 1994 to 1997, Rhule played for Joe Paterno, even earning Academic All-Big Ten honors in his final season.
