Gameday Coverage: No. 11 Penn State vs. No. 8 Utah

It’s The Granddaddy of Them All, folks.

Penn State will conclude the 2022 season with a Rose Bowl matchup against Utah.

The Nittany Lions make their first appearance in Pasadena for the first time since 2017 when they lost a 52-49 thriller to USC in what is widely regarded as one of the best college football games ever. Meanwhile, the Utes make their second consecutive Rose Bowl appearance. Last season, they fell to Ohio State in a slim 48-45 loss.

Both teams have a lot to play for, and it certainly has the potential to be another college football classic. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Penn State’s fifth Rose Bowl appearance.

Television

Saturday’s matchup will kick off at 5 p.m. EST on ESPN. Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit will be on the call, while Holly Rowe will provide updates from the sideline.

Weather

The sun will be peaking through the clouds throughout a chilly day in Pasadena. Temperatures at kickoff will get up to 58 degrees and drop to the low 50s by the end of the game, according to AccuWeather. There will be light winds, as it’ll stay around six miles per hour with small gusts throughout the game.

Last Meeting

This is the first-ever meeting between Penn State and Utah.

Injuries/Opt-Outs

James Franklin announced that Olu Fashanu will be a game-time decision for the game, while both Keyvone Lee and Smith Vilbert will be available. Parker Washington will miss the game after being ruled out for the season in November As for the team’s opt-outs, Joey Porter Jr. is the only healthy player to opt out of the game for Penn State.

As for Utah, star tight end and the team’s leading receiver Dalton Kincaid and running back Tavion Thomas will miss the game due to injury. All-American cornerback Clark Phillips III opted out of the bowl game.

Betting Lines

Penn State is currently a 1.5-point underdog on FanDuel Sportsbook. The over/under is set at 52.5 points.
