Staff Picks: What Needs To Be Included In Beaver Stadium’s Potential Renovation Plans?

At the Board of Trustees meeting last Friday, President Neeli Bendapudi announced intentions to begin renovations on our beloved Beaver Stadium. There are no official plans in the works yet, but the proposed multi-year process would significantly change the iconic venue.

With that in mind, our staffers have some input on what needs to be included in the renovations.

Brady Miller: Cell Phone Tower

There is only one logical renovation that needs to be done to improve Beaver Stadium: a cell tower. If you don’t get into the student section at the same time as your friends, good luck finding them. On a Saturday, with 107k strong, cell phones can’t connect to the internet. If a new cell tower was built near Beaver Stadium, fans could communicate better and talk about what’s going on during the game.

Joe Lister: JoePa Statue

We’re suggesting things to add to Beaver Stadium? Let’s try bringing back a classic.

Ever since the famous statue of former Penn State football head coach Joe Paterno was removed from Beaver Stadium after his dismissal, diehard JoePa fans have been asking for the sculpture to be reinstalled.

Yes, Paterno has a cloudy legacy in Penn State history. However, Beaver Stadium doesn’t exist at the same capacity that it currently does without his effect on the program. As Penn State turns a new corner in its history with the hirings of Neeli Bendapudi and Pat Kraft, the administration has shown that it’s more willing to accept Paterno as part of the school’s history. It’s time for Penn State to go back to what made it great.

Rico Gore: LED Lights And Improved Sound System

Have you seen the LED lights in Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium? Check it out. Listen, this is going to piss off some of the “tradition trumps all else” Penn State football fans. However, LED lights that can strobe and change color are the future. Actually, no — it’s becoming the standard.

Many colleges already have them installed, including Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. James Franklin pulling in big recruits is already incredible, but this program needs to do everything it can get to pull in even more. LED lights are sick. The lighting at Beaver Stadium already needs to be upgraded anyway, so let that upgrade be LED strobing and color-changing lights.

The sound system at Beaver is absurd. Who thought it would be a great idea to put all the speakers on one side of the stadium? It drives me absolutely crazy how dumb this setup is. This is the absolute first thing that needs to be fixed, and I can’t believe it hasn’t been addressed yet. I hate it. You hate it. Change it, Pat. Please.

Nolan Wick: Indoor Concourses

I’d like to see indoor concourses implemented for a change. It would not only be more modern and consistent with how newer stadiums are being designed, but the concourses would be a refuge at halftime (or any other time) whenever it’s freezing cold and/or raining. With the College Football Playoff’s impending expansion that could very well see Beaver Stadium hosting games in January, it would be nice to have a way to take a break from freezing in the cold at halftime in a place other than the bathrooms.

Aidan Conrad: The END ZONE

The stands in the north end zone in Beaver Stadium should be replaced by the finest of clubs. Beaver Stadium’s north end zone seating just looks out of place in a way. This can spice it up.

In the Las Vegas Raiders’ new Allegiant Stadium, the team made headlines by adding its own nightclub in the stadium’s north end zone for a unique fan experience.

At the end of the day, who wouldn’t want to watch a Penn State football game with some of State College’s finest ladies?

Gabe Angieri: A Dome

Yup.
