Staff Picks: Brainstorming ‘Rothsteinisms’ For Penn State Hoops Head Coach Mike Rhoades
The college basketball season has finally come to an end, and a new era is upon us for Penn State men’s basketball. Recently, former VCU head coach Mike Rhoades was announced as the new head coach of Penn State hoops.
If you’re a successful college basketball coach, you’ve likely been giving a “Rothsteinism.” Jon Rothstein, a CBS Sports Insider, is known for tweeting out sayings for teams or head coaches after they win a game. Former head coach Micah Shrewsberry was gifted “More Plays Than Broadway” by Rothstein, but Penn State is in need of a new one for Rhoades.
We decided to brainstorm a few options for Rothstein.
Aidan Conrad: “Mike Rhoades’ Defense: More Traffic Than The I-95.”
Penn State is going to have a whole new identity with Rhoades at the helm. Last year, the Nittany Lions ranked 96th in the nation in defensive rating, according to KenPom. VCU, on the other hand, was ranked 15th in the nation. Expect Rhoades to bring that same play style to Happy Valley.
Next season, we will truly see the Nittany Lions be ~gritty, not pretty.~ Can we still say that?
Brady Miller: “On The Rhoades Again.”
Posting a 4-7 record, The Nittany Lions struggled away from home this past season. I believe Rhoades will come into Happy Valley with a new mentality and prepare the team to travel away from the Bryce Jordan Center.
Nolan Wick: “More Recruits Than The Military.”
Did you think that the guy who left for Notre Dame was a big-time recruiter here? Well, Rhoades is about to recruit twice as much after the mass exodus Shrewsberry caused by leaving. So many roster spots need to be filled that even one of Onward State’s finest is lobbying for his chance to be the program’s next big star.
In all seriousness, Rhoades is going to attract several VCU players currently in the portal to Happy Valley, likely including reigning A-10 Player of the Year Ace Baldwin. As a Pennsylvania native, I expect he’ll also successfully recruit in-state talent.
Hopefully, everyone is going to flock to Happy Valley in due time, hence Rhoades’ very own Rothsteinism.
Larkin Richards: “Mike Rhoades: The Rhoade To Success.”
This is a no-brainer. Penn State men’s basketball is going to keep its momentum. A successful season is coming with Rhoades at the helm.
Connor Krause: “Penn State Basketball. The Rhoade Less Traveled”
Bold, different, and aggressive.
If that phrase isn’t already etched into your brain as a Penn State hoops supporter, get used to it. Barring unforeseen circumstances, newly hired head coach Mike Rhoades will mentor the Nittany Lions for at least seven seasons with his unorthodox, defensive-minded style.
With only Kanye Clary and Demetrius Lilley remaining as scholarship pieces on Rhoades’ first-year roster, the two commodities, for the time being, are clearly taking the high “Rhoade” for putting their faith in the first-time Power Five leader.
While the Nittany Lions will depend on a deep transfer portal haul to secure a viable on-floor product ahead of next fall, there’s one guaranteed certainty — each and every member of the group will be a part of a unique path blazed by Rhoades himself.
Keeley Lamm: “Penn State Basketball. A Pot Of Bold.”
“Bold, different, and aggressive.” — Mike Rhoades basically every day.
We aren’t quite sure who will be contributing to Penn State hoops’ boldness, difference, and aggression next season, but in true Nittany Lion fashion, Rhoades is certain to pull together a ragtag crew of gritty, game-changers.
Bold, not cold.
Gabe Angieri: “Mike Rhoades. Take Me Home”
Country roads Mike Rhoades, take me home
This is an obvious one, folks. You can interpret “home” however you want, but it can include places like the Bryce Jordan Center, the Big Ten Tournament Championship, and even the NCAA Tournament. Wherever you think you belong, Mike Rhoades can take you there.
