[Photo Story] Onward State Sweeps The Daily Collegian In Dodgeball

On April 14, 2023, Onward State history was made.

After The Daily Collegian Editor-in-Chief Megan Swift challenged fellow Penn State student media outlet Onward State to a dodgeball match, the blog knew it needed to accept. It was a long time coming.

Onward State Managing Editor Gabe Angieri welcomed the challenge and quickly assembled his team of dodgeball-slinging bloggers that took down Swift’s crew in a straight 3-0 sweep in the best-of-five format.

Relive this historic moment through the lens of our photographers from the sidelines of the East Halls basketball court dodgeball battlefield.

Onward State staffers arrived at East Halls decked out in blog merch and hungry for a win over their student media foe. With eye black and mean mugs, the group prepared for the dodgeball campaign.

Every member of the Onward State team was absolutely locked in during warmups. From group stretches to some tossing practice, no one felt unprepared heading into the first set.

Associate editor Connor Krause could be seen testing his aim by attempting to nail Angieri pregame.

Our fearless leader Angieri pumped up the crew prior to the first game with some threats motivational words to get his team in the zone.

Let the games begin. The 15-person “O” team hit the court for the opening round and briskly secured the dub in under 10 minutes.

The opening match of the best-of-five set proved to be the closest match of all. Onward State contrib CJ Doebler sealed the win for the blog with a laser shot that knocked out two of The Collegian’s staffers.

GOAT, for real.

Angieri and Co. took the court for the second game with confidence but only maintained an uncomfortable 1-0 lead.

Contrib Slaughter Joseph defied gravity in the second round and flaunted his vertical for the folks in attendance.

Aidan Conrad took care of business and finished off the second round with fiery aim and pure grit for “Team S.” The sideline stormed the court in celebration before preparing for what turned out to be the victory clinching game.

The game-deciding round was similar to the first two, and although Onward State dominated the dodgeball court as a whole, not every staffer was left standing at the end.

Onward State snatched the overall 3-0 sweep and celebrated with a rendition of “All I Do is Win.” Pure electricity.
