Penn State Football To Host Buffalo In 2026

Update, 7:45 p.m.: A Penn State Athletics spokesperson confirmed that Penn State football is no longer playing San Jose State in 2026.

Original Story: Penn State football and the University of Buffalo are set to meet again during the 2026 season, as announced by the Bulls in a press release Thursday afternoon.

The teams’ matchup is currently scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions were previously scheduled to take on San Jose State on the same day, but with the recent announcement, the status of that contest is unclear.

With the recent scheduling change, Buffalo is now the third out-of-conference team to be scheduled for the Nittany Lions’ 2026 campaign, seemingly replacing San Jose State. Games against Marshall and Temple were announced for the same season back in 2021

Penn State and Buffalo have faced off only four times before the planned 2026 date. The Nittany Lions hold a 3-1 all-time series lead, though the Bulls’ lone win came in 1900.

In their most recent matchup, the Nittany Lions handily dispatched the Bulls 45-13 during the 2019 season. The Sean Clifford-led squad outscored its opponents 38-3 in the second half after a lackluster first half.
