Penn State’s Shayne Van Ness Named Big Ten Wrestler Of The Week

Penn State wrestler Shayne Van Ness won Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Van Ness’ recognition came after he won his first three matches of the season at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic. He shares this week’s award with Dean Hamiti of Wisconsin.

Van Ness secured three pins in three matches at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic this past weekend as he started his sophomore campaign with a bang. The 149-pound wrestler finished all three of his opponents in the first period, wrestling only 6:34 of a possible 21 minutes. Van Ness pinned Army’s Eddie Hummel in 2:06, Bloomsburg’s Cade Balestrini in 2:58, and Lehigh’s Kelvin Griffin in 1:30.

This success allowed Van Ness to join 10 other Nittany Lion wrestlers, out of the team’s 20 competitors, in going undefeated over the weekend.

Penn State wrestling will be back in action next on Sunday, November 19, at the Army Black Knight Invite in West Point, New York. The action will be streamed on FloWrestling.
