Penn State Football Tight End Theo Johnson Declares For NFL Draft, Will Play In Peach Bowl

Penn State football tight end Theo Johnson has declared for the NFL Draft, he announced Friday. Johnson will play in the Nittany Lions’ Peach Bowl bout with Ole Miss on December 30.

Johnson has been with Penn State since 2020 and has seen the field in each season. He appeared in every game in his second year and even made six starts, catching 19 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown.

The Ontario, Canada, native continued to improve in 2022, starting nine times at tight end. He caught 20 passes for 328 yards, and his four touchdown catches were good enough for fourth-most by a tight end in the Big Ten.

Johnson split duties with Tyler Warren as starting tight end his junior year, as the two created one of the most dynamic tight end rooms in the Big Ten. Johnson himself caught 32 passes for 325 yards and six touchdowns.

Johnson’s declaration for the draft continues a trend of Penn State tight ends reaching the professional level. Johnson was preceded by Jacksonville Jaguar Brenton Strange, Mike Gesicki of the New England Patriots, and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Pat Freiermuth.

With defensive end Chop Robinson’s declaration for the NFL Draft and opt-out of the Peach Bowl earlier this week, Johnson is the second Nittany Lion to declare for the draft.
