Penn State Student-Athletes Tally Record-Breaking Academic Performance For Fall 2023 Semester

Penn State student-athletes registered a record-breaking academic fall 2023 semester, the university reported. The Nittany Lions earned a record NCAA graduation success rate of 93% in the 2023 report, and 12 programs earned perfect ratings. This is the seventh year Penn State student-athletes displayed a record or record-tying academic performance.

At the conclusion of the fall 2023 semester, Penn State student-athletes recorded a 3.24 grade point average (GPA). Across all sports, 581 student-athletes (70% of all student-athletes) achieved at least a 3.0 semester GPA, and 298 received dean’s list honors (3.5 semester GPA). Additionally, a record-breaking 80 full-time student-athletes achieved a 4.0 semester GPA, and 24 of those students maintained a 4.0 cumulative GPA. This is the seventh straight fall semester that Penn State had over 500 student-athletes with at least a 3.0 GPA.

“Our student-athletes continue to amaze me with their commitment to excellence both academically and athletically. To have 70% of our students earn a 3.0 GPA in the fall semester is outstanding and should be a source of pride for all Penn Staters,” Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Patrick Kraft said in a release. “Even more impressive and worthy of acknowledgment are the 80 student-athletes who had a perfect 4.0 in the fall. We are so proud to have these students represent the blue and white.”

The highest fall semester team GPA among Penn State’s 31 programs was recorded by the women’s gymnastics team with a 3.78 GPA. Other notable teams that followed include women’s tennis (3.63), women’s lacrosse (3.57), women’s swimming and diving (3.57), and women’s soccer (3.56). The highest GPA among the men’s programs was recorded by men’s hockey (3.50).

Nearly 600 student-athletes finished with above a 3.0 semester GPA while 80 finished with a perfect 4.0. Nearly 300 student-athletes were dean’s list honorees and 27 teams compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
