Penn State Wrestling Tallies 1,000th Program Win

Top-ranked Penn State wrestling eclipsed its 1,000th all-time program win on Monday when it trounced No. 14 Rutgers 35-3 in front of a packed crowd in the Bryce Jordan Center.

As one of the most dominant teams in the history of collegiate wrestling, Penn State’s all-time record now sits at 1,000-303-37 after Monday’s win. The Nittany Lions join Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Oregon State, Iowa, and Minnesota as the only Division I programs to reach the 1,000-win mark.

The Penn State Wrestling Club was formed in the fall of 1908 before the Collegiate Athletic Association recognized the sport as part of the organization. The first match took place in March of 1909 when Penn State challenged Cornell in its first-ever match. The Nittany Lions lost the match 6-1 but went on to thrive over the next few decades.

Since Penn State wrestling was founded 115 years ago, the Nittany Lions have had a storied history of excellence, highlighted by 12 national championships with 55 individual champions by 35 athletes and nine conference championships. The team has also produced 241 All-Americans and five Hodge Trophy winners in its history thus far.

Head coach Cael Sanderson, who recorded his 200th career win on Friday in dominant fashion when the Nittany Lions defeated No. 3 Iowa 29-6 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, has been the face of the program since he took over in 2009. He is responsible for 11 out of the program’s 12 national championships and has Penn State on a 54-match winning streak.

The Bryce Jordan Center has been a building of great significance for the Penn State wrestling team, offering record-breaking attendances and fantastic showmanship. Last season, the Nittany Lions hosted the Michigan Wolverines and the Iowa Hawkeyes on separate occasions and recorded nearly 16,000 fans in attendance.

Penn State’s next match is Sunday, February 18, when it hosts No. 5 Nebraska in Rec Hall to wrap up Big Ten regular-season competition.
