Penn State Wrestling’s Carter Starocci Suffers Medical Forfeit In Big Ten Championships

Penn State wrestling star Carter Starocci medically forfeited his match in the Big Ten Championships on Saturday, officially losing to Minnesota’s Andrew Sparks in the 174-pound category. Starocci first injured himself in the Nittany Lions’ last dual against Edinboro and is expected to forfeit his consolation bracket match in the Big Ten Championships as well.

Starocci, who was on a 64-match win streak prior to his forfeit, will have to rely on an at-large bid to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Starocci has won three NCAA titles already in his collegiate career and is seeking his fourth consecutive trophy.

Starocci’s appearance at the Big Ten Championships qualified him for the NCAA Championships, though his defeats will likely hurt his seeding. Starocci’s medical status is unclear as head coach Cael Sanderson hasn’t given many updates, and Starocci stepped on the mat on Saturday wearing a large knee brace.

This season, Starocci recorded a 12-0 record with 11 bonus point victories. He also hasn’t lost since the 2020-21 season and owns a career record of 88-2.
