Penn State To Place Campus-Wide Ban On TikTok
TikTok can no longer be used on Penn State campuses beginning April 1, 2024.
The restriction of the popular social media app follows a state-wide ban of the app in Florida. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill that “prohibits students from using TikTok on any district-owned devices and blocks anyone from using the app as a means of promoting school activities.”
Penn State has decided to go in a similar direction, and student, faculty, or staff devices connected to university wifi will not have the ability to use the app.
Penn State College of Information Sciences and Technology Dean Andrea Tapia cited “these kids are dumb as hell” as one of the reasons the university opted to implement the ban after a three-year long study completed by the college.
Additional justification included fear of TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, acquiring personal information from users.
There have been rumors for years about TikTok being banned throughout the United States, but the restriction never seemed to materialize until now. A university as large as Penn State could influence schools across the nation to take similar action.
Only time will tell to see what will happen to the Penn State influencer pipeline that produced top-tier content creators and Friends of the Show Katie Feeney and Brad Kraut.
We’ll update this post with more information as it becomes available.
