Staff Picks: Future Events Beaver Stadium Should Host
The Penn State Board of Trustees recently approved a $700 million renovation of Beaver Stadium, which will take place over the next three years.
With these changes, Beaver Stadium will be able to host events other than Penn State football in the winter months. Some of our staffers shared their picks of what those events should be in the future.
Michael Siroty: Michael Bublé Concert
Sure, State College winters are a little chilly and snowy, but throw on a jacket, or four, and enjoy a Beaver Stadium Michael Bublé concert. With hits like “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” “Winter Wonderland,” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” there’s no better Christmas song singer than Bublé, and the vibes of a wintertime concert of his with 107,000 people on hand would be unmatched. Beaver Stadium could even add Christmas lights to enhance the scene.
Joe Lister: Onward State Vs. the Daily Collegian Dodgeball Game
Yup. What, the Daily Collegian, are you guys scared over there? There’s nothing wrong with losing your third inter–outlet game in as many years. However, there might be some shame in doing so in front of 107,000 of your best friends.
Mikey DeAngelis: Highmark Stadium South Or Acrisure Stadium East
The NFL doesn’t do “special location” games within the US in the same way that the NHL does, but that doesn’t mean that a winterized Beaver Stadium couldn’t host an NFL game. There have been several occasions over the last few years that due to extreme snowy conditions, the Buffalo Bills or Pittsburgh Steelers have considered moving a game to an alternate location. I propose that Beaver Stadium become the official “backup stadium” for these two teams in the event of an emergency.
Ally Eaton: Morgan Wallen Concert
Concerts in Beaver Stadium are already a fan favorite, so why not add more? With the new approved renovations, it seems only fitting that a new slate of artists be drafted up. My proposed pick? Morgan Wallen. It’s well known that Penn State’s hosted its fair share of country artists for concerts, and I can’t think of a better pick than the popular country star. Wallen has recently performed at venues of slightly smaller size near me, and each time, my Snapchat stories are flooded with people I know in attendance. I believe he could sell out newly-renovated Beaver with ease with the popularity among girls and country fans alike. The concert would also generate an insane amount of revenue for the University, which it will need with the amount of money not allotted for renovations.
Fernando Martinez: United States Men’s Or Women’s Soccer Match
The sport of soccer has been increasing in popularity lately with the men’s World Cup coming to the country in two years. Due to that reason, I think it’s time to allow a United States friendly match at Beaver Stadium. This event would most likely fill up the entire stadium and I wouldn’t be surprised if fans from the United States’ opponent are attracted to come to State College for the game. Recently, I saw that the Mexican national team will play a friendly game against the Brazilian national team this summer at Texas A&M’s stadium. If Texas A&M can organize this, then why can’t Penn State do the same? I think it makes all the sense to host this sporting event in the future.
Noah Flenard: Philadelphia Eagles Vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
The renovations to Beaver Stadium would create an awesome neutral-field matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers. This in-state rivalry would allow fans of each respective team to meet literally in the middle of Pennsylvania for the game. Penn State has many students from the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia area who support those teams. This game would attract many students here at Penn State. Since Beaver Stadium is larger than any NFL stadium, it would also allow the NFL to make a large sum of money from advertising, ticket sales, merchandise, and much more. The current record for attendance at an NFL football game is 105,121. Penn State often has an attendance of over 108,000 each home game. The NFL could expect similar numbers if they decided to host the Keystone State Rivalry in Beaver Stadium.
