UPUA Elects State College Borough Council Liaison, Passes THON 5K Legislation
The 19th Assembly of the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) met on Wednesday to elect the State College Borough Council Liaison and pass one piece of legislation.
To start the meeting, UPUA’s THON committee shared a presentation highlighting the assembly’s primary goals for THON 2025, including their plans for THON Weekend, fundraising, and family relations.
After reports from UPUA President Zion Sykes and Vice President Rasha Elwakil, the assembly moved into elections.
Elections
Two representatives were nominated for the position of State College Borough Council Liaison. First was Wyatt Corbin, a second-year student. Corbin touched on the relationship between the State College Borough and University Park, and how his communication and collaboration skills set him up for success within the liaison role. The next candidate, Emma Smorgonsky, spoke about raising awareness of the borough on campus, which she plans to achieve by utilizing her strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Corbin won the election.
Before moving into new business, several representatives were sworn into the assembly: Michael Fawkles as NPHC Representative, Dayvon Boyd as Black Caucus Representative, Leslianna Terrero German as Latino Caucus Representative, Ellie Saba as MENA Representative, Nicolas Recinos-Baltodano as MGC Representative, Andrew Egan as IFC Representative, and Madelyn Hummel as Panhellenic Representative.
New Business
The only piece of new business covered by the assembly was Bill #08-19: Funding for THON 5K 2024 Water Distribution System. This bill tasks the UPUA with providing a “quench cart” for the THON 5K in order to prioritize participant health and safety. The race will take place on October 20.
Bill #08-19 passed unanimously.
