Old Main Flagpoles Restored To Previous Height

Penn State’s Office of the Physical Plant (OPP) has completed its replacement of the flagpoles in front of Old Main. After shorter, temporary flagpoles were placed in front of the university’s administrative building, OPP installed new, 90-foot poles on the building’s lawn in September.

The flagpoles that stood in front of the building were 90 years old when OPP removed them in spring 2024. OPP said the previous poles, which stood around 95′, were removed due to their age and condition.

Shorter poles flew the Pennsylvania and United States flags during some of the spring and fall semesters. When those polls were taken down, OPP took apart the bases of the flagpoles and reassembled them as they previously were when the new poles were installed.

The flags flying on the new poles are 12′ tall and 18′ wide. They were first raised on September 15.
