Power Ranking Fraternity Theme Parties’ Names
Frat parties are notorious for their sticky floors and warm beer, but some fraternities come up with party themes that cleverly incorporate their letters into the party’s title.
We decided to rank the creativity of each party name and how likely they would entice us into their sweaty basements or muddy backyards.
No. 10: ZB-Tahiti
What’s better than an island-themed getaway where you get to put on your bathing suit and get drunk with your friends? I give this one a solid 6/10 for creativity, but it’s not hitting high enough on the “get me to this party right now” factor. While it gets people excited for warm weather, the name can pretty much be replicated with any other frat letters and warm countries.
No. 9: Skulltra
This one’s pretty sick. Although Skulls is no longer a Penn State-affiliated fraternity, when it hosted its annual Skulltra, it seemed to attract more students than normal since it was Skulls’ biggest party of the year. Skulltra is unique because it can be used every year, but doesn’t attach a specific theme to the name. I’m going to have to put Skulls at No. 9 and a score of 6.5. It’s creative but doesn’t give you a picture of what the party’s all about.
No. 8: Lambdapalooza
Whoever came up with this theme deserves a raise. It effortlessly ties together Lambda’s name and the infamous festival Lollapalooza, but doesn’t try to force the name to work. It gets frat-goers excited for a party with good music, because there’s nothing worse than a frat with terrible music, especially if the party is based on an infamous festival. Overall, I’d give this one a 7.2. Well done, Lambda.
No. 7: DY2K
This seems like a very normal Y2K theme, but I give Delta Upsilon props for using their actual Greek letters in the party’s name. Y, which is Upsilon in the Greek alphabet, plays a double meaning in Delta Upsilon’s Y2K party. Also, who doesn’t love a Y2K party? I give this one a 7.5 for creativity, and I hope whoever came up with the name got a promotion.
No. 6: ATSnOw
No one really likes to go to frat row in the winter, but having a party encouraging puffer jackets and ear muffs is always a winner. The name could also be used for all of the winter parties and no one would seem to care, but Aspen or winter-themed parties always seem to get the crowds energized to keep chugging until it’s time to break out the bikinis. I’d give this one a 7.6. It’s not more creative than DY2K, but winter-themed parties are hard to come by, so it’s going to have to outrank DU.
No. 5: Americacia
Maybe it’s controversial to put this one so high on the list, but if a party is USA-themed, it immediately deserves to be at the top of the list. Americacia not only flows well off the tongue but who doesn’t want to chant USA with a beer in hand with thousands of other drunk college kids? It’s also perfect for the winter or summer, so this one gets a 7.7.
No. 4: Phi Whoville
Anything Christmas-themed also deserves to be at the top of the list. While I don’t want to see any of those creepy-nosed creatures from the real Whoville at a frat party, Phi Who gets us in the Christmas spirit with this Grinch-themed party and ready to drink some spiked eggnog. This gets a solid 7.8.
No. 3: TEP The Halls
Genius. Same with Phi Whoville, TEP The Halls will you get ready for Christmas without trying too hard with the name. TEP gets an 8.1.
No. 2: Wigma Chi
I’m both terrified and intrigued. A wig party, let alone the name Wigma Chi has to be one of the most inventive ideas I’ve heard of at a frat party. You could genuinely do it at any time of the year, and it effortlessly ties together the name Sigma Chi and the theme of wigs. Solid effort boys, this one’s a 9.3.
No. 1: Phi Psychedelic
Yes, a thousand times yes. Whether it’s glow in the dark or just makes you trip during the entire time in the basement, a psychedelic-themed party is pretty unusual but it works. Plus, it’s pretty smooth at weaving Phi Psi and the word psychedelic. This takes the cake with a 9.6.
