Penn State Football Projected To Host College Football Playoff Game In Latest Predictions
Fresh off a gutsy win against Wisconsin on the road, Penn State football remains undefeated through seven games. Despite its impressive ranking, Penn State is not favored to win against Ohio State on Saturday.
Most analysts project the Nittany Lions to end the season as a No. 5 through No. 8 seed in the College Football Playoff, putting them in a position to host a playoff game in Happy Valley.
While the fact that Penn State will host a playoff game is much agreed upon, the opponent differs from projection to projection. Let’s look at the potential matchups the Nittany Lions could be slated to play in the postseason.
Jerry Palm, CBS Sports
Jerry Palm has No. 9 Texas A&M coming up north for a showdown in Beaver Stadium against No. 8 Penn State. The Aggies sit at 7-1 but are the only team in the SEC with an unbeaten, 5-0 conference record.
This game would mark back-to-back postseason matchups with an SEC school since its 38-25 loss to Ole Miss in the 2023 Peach Bowl.
Kyle Bonagura, ESPN
Kyle Bonagura predicted that No. 6 Penn State will host No. 11 Iowa State in the first round of the playoffs. He chalked up the Nittany Lions to win that game and advance to the quarter-finals to face No. 3 Miami in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, which would mark the Nittany Lions’ second straight appearance in the Peach Bowl.
That is where Bonagura believes the road will end for Penn State, as he has No. 3 Miami advancing to play No. 2 Georgia in the semifinal.
Mark Schlabach, ESPN
Similar to his peer Bonagura, Mark Schlabach had Penn State hosting and winning its first-round playoff game. However, Schlabach had No. 12 Boise State slated as Penn State’s first-round opponent. Schlabach believed the Nittany Lions would advance to the quarterfinals to take on No. 4 BYU in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.
Schlabach predicted Penn State would beat the Cougars and then head to Florida to take on No. 1 Oregon in the Capital One Orange Bowl, but didn’t have the blue and white advancing any further.
Erick Smith, USA Today
Although he didn’t include seeding in his projection, Erick Smith predicted Penn State will host Tennessee. In his USA Today projection, Smith had the Nittany Lions advancing to the quarterfinals to play Georgia in the Sugar Bowl but didn’t have the Nittany Lions winning.
The last time the Nittany Lions faced the Volunteers was in 2007 when Penn State beat Tennessee in the Outback Bowl 20-10.
Joe Tansey, Bleacher Report
Just as CBS Sports did, Joe Tansey of Bleacher Report predicted that No. 11 Texas A&M will come to Happy Valley to play No. 6 Penn State.
