Penn State Football Ranked No. 6 In First College Football Playoff Rankings

Penn State football was ranked No. 6 in the first edition of the College Football Playoff rankings, ESPN announced Tuesday evening. The Nittany Lions were seeded No. 7 with a projected home matchup against No. 10 Notre Dame.

The Nittany Lions are 7-1 this season and 4-1 in the Big Ten after suffering a 20-13 loss to Ohio State last Saturday. Penn State was the third-highest-ranked team in the conference behind No. 1 Oregon and No. 2 Ohio State. Indiana was also ranked No. 8 and seeded at No. 9.

If the Nittany Lions can win out, a Big Ten Championship appearance is possible, a College Football Playoff berth is almost certain, and having a home playoff game is also likely. Penn State plays Washington and Maryland at home and Purdue and Minnesota on the road to end the season.

On Sunday, the Nittany Lions dropped from No. 3 to No. 6 in the AP Poll. Penn State was ranked No. 3 for two weeks this season, the team’s highest rank of the season after starting the year at No. 8.

Penn State will host Washington in the annual White Out game at 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 9. The game will streamed on Peacock.

The next College Football Playoff rankings come out at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12, on ESPN.
